Lab # 10

Title : Respiration : Breathing Rate

Aim : To determine how breathing rate changes with different activities (running, walking, skipping).

Apparatus/Materials : stop watch, skipping rope.

Diagram :

Method: 1. Choose three students from your class.

2. The first student should sit down and relax

3. Use a stop watch to count the number of breaths taken in one minute and record it in a table.

4. One inhalation and exhalation is counted as one breath. Repeat this and find an average. The student
then runs around the school field for two minutes.

5. Immediately after activity count the number of breaths every minute until the number of breaths
returns to the average breathing rate.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 with students walking and skipping.

7. Record results in a table.

8. Plot a graph of number of breaths against time.

Graph :

Number of breaths vs. time

Graph must have a title, scale, correct axes used, axes labeled, plotted points accurate, lines properly drawn,
different parts of the curve labeled.

Discussion : 1. What is aerobic respiration?

2. Where does it occur in cells?

3. What are the products?

4. What is oxygen debt?

5. Describe the trends seen in the graph and explain the results.

6. From the graph indicate and explain:

a. when lactic acid would have been at its highest.

b. when the oxygen debt was repaid.
