PREWRITNG STRATEGIES
INTRODUCTION:
Prewriting is the first stage of the writing process, and includes all the things you do
before you are ready to write out the first version of your text. Prewriting is preparation
process that you can complete before you actually write your paper, essay or summary. it
involves generating ideas, general organizing, and outlining. Authors from all sides of the
writing profession—novelists, essayists, reporters, columnists, playwrights, screenwriters,
speechwriters, and academics—use prewriting techniques to stay organized and efficient
while working on a writing assignment. The objective of prewriting, is to prepare students
for writing by allowing them to discover what they know and what else they need to know.
Prewriting invites exploration and promotes the motivation to write.
Prewriting is important for students because it is the stage of the writing process in
which they are able to get their ideas out of their heads and into an organized manner before
they begin. Important aspect of pre-writing is the notion of organization. When students
prewrite, it gives them the opportunity to organize all of their paragraphs. Furthermore, it
gives them the opportunity to decide how they want to lay out their ideas. It helps writers to
develop clear reasoning and find week points in arguments. It increases efficiency by helping
the writer to map, plan, or brainstorm about their writing before beginning a first draft.
Prewriting can also prevent errors. When students do prewriting, it can prevent grammatical
and mechanical errors in their final drafts because it is important that essay should be free of
errors.
Brainstorming:
Brainstorming is like freewriting around a specific topic. It helps you bring your
subconscious thoughts into consciousness, identifying as many ideas as possible that are
related to a particular topic.

Listing is a brainstorming technique many people find useful. It means doing just what its
name suggests -- listing possible topics and then sub lists of things you could say about each
topic.
Clustering / Mapping:
Clustering is used to establish relationships among your ideas. To cluster ideas, write your
topic in the centre of a sheet of paper. Draw a circle around it, and surround that circle with
related ideas, connecting the two together with lines. If some of the ideas lead to more
specific ideas, write those down, stemming from main ideas.
Freewriting:
Freewriting is when someone writes freely what comes to mind in sentences or phrases,
without worrying about grammar, punctuation or making sense.
Editing:
Upon completion of a rough draft, the writer should take on the first edit of his work. Editing
is an on-going process, not a one-time event. When an author edits his work, he is checking
the piece for errors. These are typically errors in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and
formatting (indenting of paragraphs, etc.).
Final draft:
The final draft is what you will submit as your completed Eassy. Your writing should look
fairly polished. Choppy sentences, poor or non-existent transitions between paragraphs,
