Growth in Face of Pandemic
ASBA to Combine Tennis,
Courts & Recreation Divisions
The American Sports Builders Association
has decided to combine its Tennis Division
and its Courts & Recreation Division into
one “Courts Division” starting in 2021.
After much consideration by the ASBA
Board of Directors and a special explor-
atory task force, the Board voted to move
forward with a single Courts Division that
will represent the interest of builders,
designers and suppliers of tennis courts,
pickleball courts, indoor and outdoor
basketball and volleyball courts and a
cadre of emerging sport surfaces in which
ASBA members are involved.

I have been a USRSA member for
nearly 30 years, and while I appreciate
the service and information the USRSA
provides, I feel there’s been a decline in
some areas—specifically, the stringer
information in RSI. I remember when,
in nearly every issue of the USRSA
publication, there was a review of a new
string. Now, it seems we are lucky to
see three strings reviewed a year. And,
there sure are a lot of new strings that
come out annually.
Probably 75 to 80 percent of my
inventory today is based on those
reviews, and upon the sample strings
provided to USRSA members by the
manufacturers. I “discovered” so many
strings in this manner that I never
would have heard of or had the oppor-

small string companies with just a few

When Are Strings Dead?

How can your players tell if their strings
are dead? There are several keys:
First, do the strings move around and
continually need to be straightened? If
so, players won’t have as much power as
they did when the strings were newer,
so they’ll need to swing harder to
achieve the same results.
When the player hits the ball, does it
sound different than it used to? Is your
player experiencing new pain in their
arm, shoulder and/or elbow? As strings
lose their effectiveness, players will
lose touch or feel on shots, especially on
drop shots and volleys.
