SW280 INSPECTION OF COOLED

EXHAUST VALVE SEATS
Introduction
The cooling water for cooling the exhaust valve seats of SW 280 engines is supplied and
discharged via cooling water pipes fitted in the cylinder head (fig 1, C).
A teflon ring (fig. 1, E) is used for sealing the cooling water pipe in the valve seat.

Leakage indication
Experience in the field has shown
that the sealing between the teflon
ring and the exhaust valve seat is
not guaranteed under all circumstances,
so that cooling water leakage may occur.

If water is evident from the indicator

holes (fig. 2, A) in the cylinder head,
this indicates water leakage past
the teflon sealing ring.

This leakage is due to improper sealing, which can have two causes

• 1) The surface of the cooling water holes in the valve seats, in which the teflon rings are
fitted, is too rough.

• 2) The cooling water holes in the valve seat are slightly oval.

Cooling water starvation of the valve seat

Though it must not be recommended, it is sometimes possible to cure the cooling water leakage
with a light hammer blow on the cooling water pipe.
If this is done with (too much) force, the cooling water pipe together with the teflon ring may slip
into the internal cooling water channel of the valve seat, which will cause the cooling water
supply to be completely blocked and the valve seat will be no longer cooled.
This may result in damage to valve and valve seat.

Repair of cooling water leakage

An insufficient cooling water sealing, as mentioned in points 1 and 2 can be repaired by
machining/trueing up the cooling water passage holes in the valve seat with a special reaming
tool *), (see fig. 3).

Fig 3.

Proceed as follows:
Remove the collar plug (fig. 1, A) from the cylinder head.
Caution: take care of the pressure spring!
Screw a M8 bolt into the cooling water pipe and pull it out of the cooling water channel taking
care that the teflon ring is removed at the same time.

Screw the tool in the cylinder head.

The hole in the exhaust valve seat can then be trued up by hand with the conical reamer.
Take care that the least possible material will be removed and that the channel is thoroughly
cleaned.

Refit the cooling water pipe and a new teflon ring.

Also use a new O-ring, which has to be lubricated with "Parker Super-O-lube",
(Part No. 7800 329), as well as a new copper ring.
Check size "X", fig. 1, (17.1 to 17.3 mm).

Checking and correcting the position of the cooling water pipe

When the position of the cooling water pipe and teflon ring is correct, distance "X" (fig. 1) will be
17.1 to 17.3 mm.
When distance "X" is larger than 18.5 mm, it must be assumed that the cooling water pipe with
teflon ring has slipped into the cooling water channel of the valve seat.

When removing the cooling water pipe, the teflon ring may sometimes remain inside the bore
hole.
The teflon ring must then be carefully cut through using a long thin chisel and removed using a
little hook.
If this is not successful, the exhaust valve seat must be replaced in accordance with the
instruction supplied by Wärtsilä Nederland.

Summary
• Always check SW 280 engines for water leakage from the indicator holes in the cylinder
head.
(This includes engines that have still to be commissioned.)

• Always check during overhaul of cylinder heads if the teflon rings have been fitted in the
correct position (size "X").

• In case of exhaust valve/seat problems always check if the cooling water supply of the
exhaust valve seats meets the criteria as specified in this Service Instruction.

Attention:
On the exhaust side of the engine, the cylinder head has to be removed to gain access to the
cooling water channels.
