CHAPTER 2

STUDIES AND LITERATURE REVIEW

FOREIGN LITERATURE

UI Haq & Chand (2012) investigated the usage and popularity of famous

social media network (Facebook) among university students with special focus on

the gender based comparison and the impact of the selected social medium on

their academic performance. The two researchers evaluate the pattern and frequency

of Facebook use among university students while focusing gender that majority

of the users (61%) agree that this social medium has adverse effects on their

academic  performance.  Further  analysis  reveals  that  among  these  61%,

14
majority of  the respondents were male. In addition to adverse effects of

Facebook on academic  performance.

Abhyankar (2011) pointed out that from the very beginning; human beings

always associated themselves to some form of social structure as they evolved

across generations. All human beings crave social life, but not all can have time

and resources to enjoy social circle where they can communicate, collaborate

and freely express themselves with like-minded peers for satisfying their different

needs like security, assets, skills, relationships, science and technology, events,

politics, history, literature, art, etc. There is no end to the list of fundamental

principles that can drive people to create platforms for communication and

interaction, mutually beneficial for the whole community.

He further states that “Social Media” is an online community where people

across the globe (irrespective of demographic and geographical differences) can

develop network with different organizations or individuals for a specific purpose.

It creates a chain of linked/connected entities (individuals/organizations,

communities, forums, groups etc.) like a tree with multiple branches and nodes.

LOCAL LITERATURE

According to Commission on Information and Communications Technology

(CICT) Chairman Ivan John E. Uy said that social networking sites can be a

useful tool in public service delivery. “The use of Facebook and Twitter in

government offices provides better access to the public, ” he said in an interview

aired over DZRB. There are 24 million Internet users in the Philippines, 51% of

15
which use social networking sites. Social media Is an effective platform for

information dissemination and engagement.

Karen Fraxier (2010) public relations specialist, writes that social media

“has changed the way people interact. In many ways, social media has led to

positive changes in the way people communicate and share information;

however, it has a dark side, as well. Social media can sometimes result in

negative outcomes, some with long-term consequences.”

Karen cites a Case in Central Manila University of Medicine study that

showed hyper-networking (more than three hours on social networks per day)

and hyper texting (more than 120 text messages per day) correlated with

unhealthy behaviors in teens, including drinking, smoking and sexual activity.

Hyper-networking was also associated with depression, substance abuse, poor

sleep patterns, suicide and poor academic performance.

FOREIGN STUDIES

According to Fuchs, Christian. 2009. Social Media Sites and the

Surveillance Society. A Critical Case Study of the Usage of study, Facebook, and

MySpace by Students in Salzburg in the Context of Electronic Surveillance. 674

students from Salzburg participated in the study that was conducted by the Theory

Research Group (University of Salzburg, ICT&S Center).

16
The study recommends that citizens see commercial Internet platforms that

store and evaluate personal data generally critically and that by establishing

special consumer protection websites it could be documented in the public,

which rights in dealing with personal data such platforms obtain by their terms

of use and their privacy terms.

LOCAL STUDIES

Social networking media is about sharing or communicating with other

people. It has spread Its wings to various other fields and education is one of

the new sectors where the concept of social media is making a great role

(Francisco, 2014). They are communication channels or tools used to store,

aggregate, share, discuss or deliver information with friends and colleagues using

the internet (Espino, 2015). They involve the use of web-based technologies

to transform one-way communication into an interactive online dialogue (Dixon,

2013).

The respondents of the study were the students from the ACLC who were taken as

samples from the students who were officially enrolled in the first semester of the school

year 2019 – 2020.

17
CHAPTER 3

METHODS OF RESEARCH AND PROCEDURES

This chapter present the discussion of the research methodology, variable

of the study, population and Sampling, Research Instrument, Data Gathering,

Scoring and Interpretation.

METHODS OF RESEARCH USED

This study used the descriptive survey methods of research because it

describe the phenomena under study in its natural setting. It is also used

because this was the most appropriate means of determining. The Advantage

18
and Disadvantage of Social Media on Grade 11 ICT Students in ACLC Antipolo,

Year 2019-2020.

According to Aggarwal descriptive survey is a method of research which

concern itself with present phenomena in terms of condition, practices, trends,

and relationships. It is devoted to the gathering of information about prevailing

condition or situations for the purpose of description and interpretation.

SAMPLING TECHNIQUE

The researchers use random sampling method, will picked 25 respondents

each section with a total of 100 respondents .

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researcher developed a 3 parts survey questionnaire as the main operant

of the study.

The first one is letter for the respondents (letter of approval). Second is collection

of the details of respondents profile of the selected students. Third is creating 1stsra0

19
items statement that conclude the Advantage and Disadvantage of Social media in the

given respondents.

The survey questionnaire checklist was created by the researcher and research

instructor.

DATA GATHERING

After the approval of the title at hand the researcher immediately prepared the

Gantt chart of activities that serves as the calendar of activities for the researcher. It

also served as a guide in accomplishing the desired task necessary for the conduct of

the study.

After the construction of Chapters 1,2, and 3 the researchers will secure a permit

from the AMA Computer Learning Center Antipolo to conduct the study and approved

request to the school administration of ACLC for the conduct of the study. Then the

retrival of the survey questionnaire –checklist will follow in data gathered will be

tabulated analyzed and subject to appropriate statistical treatment for its proper

interpretation.

This will guide to the construction of Chapter 4 which dealt with the detailed

result of the study . Then it will be follow by the construction of chapter 5 which

discusses the summary of findings the conclusions and the recommendations.

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter present the summary of findings, implication, conclusions and

recommendations.

Summary of Findings
The study answered the followings sub-problems:

1. ( 72% ) of the grade 11 ICT student -respondent at AMA Computer Learning Center
Antipolo are at early adolescent’s stage specifically from 15 - 16 years old.
2.The respondents answered that social media has advantage on their studies,
communication, using it as a hobby and other positive result like studies,
communication and information gathering.
3. The respondents answered that social media has disadvantage in terms of
not handling it properly and over using of it. And become one of their distraction
specially in Academic.

Conclusions

The conclusion of researcher that social media give both advantage and
disadvantage in each social media user has been confirmed after the result of survey
come. The students-respondents said that social media’s effect on their study, livings,
social life and etc. can be positive either negative in many ways. According to students-
respondents social media are positive at first use--- where you only visit it for academic
purposes like assignment, research, project and etc. Social media are good if you use it
as communication to connect to your love ones, to get updated to your friends and
school matter, and other kinds of good communication. Social media is healthy is its
help you to make your work easier. And said again by student-respondents, social
media are advantage if it is your medium to freed yourself from stress, to leisure, and to
28
make yourself happy even in indoor. The Advantage of social media is countless, the
benefits we gain from it is so much. Social media widen our knowledge and curiosity,
and as curiosity become higher people will tend to explore and discover more. The
willingness to gain more knowledge are the reason of everyone to dig in in each part of
social media which contain different toxin that may poison everyone’s mind and lifestyle.

The result of the research said that using too much social media are bad and this
is the first step to experience the social media disadvantage. According again to
student-respondents, the longer they use social media, the longer they become
obsessed on it until it became distraction in their academic, livings and social life. On
student-respondent perception, social media will become unhealthy the way individual
use it and if they let social media control and destroy them.

without being traced, it can be quite easy for anyone to bully other people on

internet.

29
 Hacking – Getting the personal information’s and privacy of a person, that be

easily hacked and share on internet.

 Addiction – The addictive part of Social media is when you spend all of your

time and consuming more hours on using internet, playing online games and

other social media sites.

 Fraud and Scams – Several examples are available where individuals have

scammed and commit fraud through the social media.

 Cause of Death – Not just by using it, by following the stunts, and other crazy

stuffs that are shared on the internet, or attempting to kill yourself.

Recommendations
With all of the foregoing analysis, interpretation, and conclusions of this study, the
following are strongly recommended for possible course of action.
FOR ADMINS:
1. Make a program to introduce the advantage and dis-advantage of social
media. Include the social media info, about the proper use of Social Media
Sites.

FOR TEACHERS:
1. Create evaluation, revise policies, and practices that encourage students to
engage in professional learning related to advantage and disadvantage of
social media.

FOR PARENTS:

30
1. Make extra effort to guide their children when using social media, make a
limit social media use that breaking may lead them to understand the do’s
and don’ts when wondering in each social media site.

FOR STUDENTS:
1. Be matured and responsible enough to understand your limits on social
media use. Make yourself aware on advantage and disadvantage of social
media use on you as teens, students and, son/ daughters.

FOR FUTURE RESEARCHERS:

1. We highly recommended to include your personal experience as social
media user so the investigation wouldn’t be that hard. Look at each side of
social media as researcher, students, and user.
