 A social institution is a group of people who
have come together for a common purpose.
 Social institutions is an interrelated system of
social roles and social norms which an
individuals is supposed to follow in the society
because majority of individuals follow these
social norms.
 Primary function of social institutions: fulfilling
the common need of society.
 function of social institutions: to build the
society itself.
 Family:
Start from birth period so we can say that:
Family is the first and mos t important social
institutions which is experienced by a child.
Family is a group of people related to eac h
other by blood relation.

2: On the basis of authority:
Patriarchal family
Matriarchal family
3: On the basis of residence
Patrilocal family (wife goes to live in husband’s home)
Matrilocal family(husband goes to live in wife’s home

Patrilineal family: traced through paternal line of family
Matrilineal family: traced through maternal line of family
