CODE OF CONDUCT

SPECIFIC PROVISIONS FOR CONDUCT FOR PLAYERS

Players are required to follow the specific provisions as outlined in this Code of Conduct:

Entries into Tournaments

Entries into and withdrawal from BWF Sanctioned Tournaments require a fair approach to protect all
Players from the possibility of manipulation to give any one Player possible advantage in gaining world
ranking points. Players entering into Tournaments need to follow a set of rules including the following:

● Players shall not withdraw from either the qualifying or main draw after publication of the draw
without evidence or proof of “bona fide” injury, illness, bereavement or another emergency
situation.

● Having entered a BWF Sanctioned Tournament and being accepted into either the qualifying or
main draw of the Tournament, a Player shall not play in another BWF Sanctioned Tournament
during the period of the Tournament the Player was originally entered in, except where explicitly
allowed according to the regulations.

● Not withdrawing from a future Tournament due to injury or illness and then playing in any
badminton Tournament during the period between the date of notification of injury/illness and the
said Tournament from which the Player has withdrawn.

● Not making travel arrangements which prevent the Player from participating in scheduled
matches or interfere with the Players’ obligation to attend anti-doping sample collection, meet
media obligations, meet sponsorship obligations or attend prize presentation ceremonies.

Being a Model Competitor, on-Court Players are at the center of competitions and their on-court conduct
is seen by other Players, the spectators in the stadium and a televisions audience of potentially hundreds
of millions of people. Acting professionally and being a good role model is expected for all Players in
international competitions.

Players are responsible for their on-court presentation, behavior, conduct and performance including the
following:

● Not arriving late for a match, resulting in a “no-show”.

● Conducting themselves in an honorable and sportsmanlike manner during any match or at any
time while within the precincts of the site of a BWF Sanctioned Tournament.

● Complying with the goodwill formalities before, during and after any match including thanking
Technical Officials and shaking hand with opposing Players. Players must thank their opponents
and umpire before leaving the field of play to celebrate with their coach or the crowd.

● Presenting themselves for competition play in a suitable smart manner with clean and acceptable
badminton sports clothing.

● Complying with the conditions of entry of each Tournament with regard to clothing and advertising
regulations

● Completing a match in progress unless reasonably unable to do so.

● Respecting technical officials and not trying to influence the decisions of technical officials in any
way using an arm, hand, racket gestures, or orally.

● Not seeking coaching during play except as permitted under the Laws. Communication of any
kind, audible or visible, between a Player and a coach may be construed as coaching.

● Not using words commonly known and understood in any language to be profane or indecent and

uttered clearly and loudly enough to be heard by the umpire or spectators.

● Not making gestures or signs with the hands and/or racket or shuttle that commonly have an
obscene or offensive meaning.

● Not intentionally hitting a shuttle dangerously or recklessly within or out of the court, hitting a
shuttle with negligent disregard for the consequences, or deliberately damaging a shuttle.

● Not deliberately tampering with the shuttle to affect its flight or speed.

● Not intentionally and violently destroying or damaging rackets or other equipment, or intentionally
and violently hitting the net, court, umpire’s chair or other fixtures during a match.

● Refrain from making statements, either within the precincts of the Tournament site or in the
media, that are abusive, insulting, personal in nature, imply bias or question the integrity of
others.

● Not physically abusing other participants. Even the unauthorized touching of such persons may
be regarded as physical abuse.

Scoring System

● A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points.

● Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.

● The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.

● At 20 all, the side which gains a 2-point lead first, wins that game.

● At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.

● The side winning a game serves first in the next game.

Interval and Change of Ends

● When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval.

● A 2-minute interval between each game is allowed.

● In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.

Singles

● At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves from
the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the left service
court.

● If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the alternate
service court.

● If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server. They serve
from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it is even.

Doubles

● A side has only one ‘service’.

● The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.

● At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the right

● service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.

● If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point, and the same server serves again
from the alternate service court.

● If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side becomes
the new serving side.

● The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when their side is
serving.

● If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the mistake is
discovered.

In a doubles match between A & B against C & D. A & B won the toss and decided to serve. A to serve
to C. A shall be the initial server while C shall be the initial receiver.

Note that this means:

● As in singles, the order of server depends on whether the score is odd or even.

● The service court is changed by the servicing side only when a point is scored. In all other

● cases, the players continue to stay in their respective service court from where they played the
previous rally. This guarantees an alternate server.

Official of the Game

Referee- the most important official of the whole tournament. He or she is in charge of the competition
and needs to ensure that the tournament is conducted following the Laws of Badminton (including court,
rackets and shuttlecock measurements), the regulations of the Badminton World Federation and/or any
other regulations that might be relevant in that specific competition.

Umpire- The umpire is the maximum authority in a particular match, and it is in charge of the court. The
duty of the umpire is to make sure that the specific match is conducted following the Laws of Badminton,
the regulations of the Badminton World Federation and/or any other regulations that might be relevant in
that specific competition. It is the umpire responsibility to judge service faults and other player faults. The
umpire keeps a record of any misbehavior or incident and reports it to the referee. He/she is also
responsible for keeping the match score, which will be announced after each point of the match. The
umpire has control over the specific match but also needs to report any serious acts to the referee, who
is, at the end, the maximum authority of the tournament.

Service Judge- The service judge is responsible for making a ‘service fault’ call and to provide shuttles to
the players. Due to the way badminton is played, the serve is one of the most important and perfected
shots of the player and, especially when playing doubles, players will bring the serve to the limit of the

legality in order to gain as much advantage as possible.

Line Judge- The line judges are responsible for indicating whether a shuttlecock landed “in” or “out” if the
shuttle lands near the lines he/she is assigned to control. Due to the fast speed of the game and the skill
of the players, this is a very challenging job and, as a result, the line judges are the officials that usually
get more pressure from the players.
