Along with the development of the world today, Vietnam has also been developing rapidly.
Besides, more and more knowledge is introduced and absorbed into Vietnamese culture. Liberal
education is one of the new subjects and types of education introduced and popularized in recent
years. However, to understand and research on this topic, it takes much effort to find and learn,
learn more to be able to provide readers with practical and accurate knowledge. Why did we
choose Liberal Education? Because this is a challenging topic and very few research students,
that is why knowledge about this field is not known in Vietnam.

A special thanks go to Dr. Nguyen Quang Tien, who assisted us so we can continue our research
in this project. The person who took the most time to help us complete this study. Moreover,
Liberal Education is a challenging topic and requires much data; it has become a lot easier when
instructed by Mr. Tien.

Our topic is Liberal Education, so we will talk in general about what we study. We want to gain
more knowledge about liberal education to understand what Liberal education brings to us. We
also want to ask the questions: Why should we learn liberal education? What are the advantages
and disadvantages of liberal education? The questions we aim to provide knowledge of liberal
education to readers.

Liberal art education appeared many years ago and many countries in the world. What is liberal
art? How has liberal appeared? Moreover, many questions for people who do not even know
what is liberal art. Our project research about liberal art can help contribute knowledge about
liberal art to many educators to make it better. We have many difficulties because this article
does not have many people choose from. However, with the helping of Mr. Tien, supper visor
who always supports and mobilizes us, so we decide to fight with this article, which we do not
have ever seen before.

liberal art to more many persons. We really have many difficulty because this article do not have

1.1 Background

professions.

2. Studying materials combined with the learning process create integrity in students' knowledge.

Some definitions of liberal arts education include best practices, achievements, and goals at the
university. However, when evaluating each individual, there are differences and some
inconsistencies between them. (Blaich C., Bost A., Chan E. & Lynch R. (2012). DEFINING
LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION. Wabash College). Additionally, according to Bird (1975,
p.109), "The liberal arts are a religion, the established religion of the ruling class. The exalted
language, the universalistic setting, the ultimate value, the inability to define, and the appeal to
personal witness…these are all familiar modes of religious discourse". Most people mistakenly
think that "liberal arts education" is "liberal art college". In fact, "liberal art college" is a term for
a university teaching system derived from the Carnegie Classification of Baccalaureate Colleges

1.2 Aim of the study project
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic formation of liberal art and some aspects that
liberal arts have brought to students. This study was conducted by a small group of students
based on available research. We can find there are many types of data support a study and make
it more reliable on the Internet like primary data, secondary data. It depends on the research
scale, so we can choose one data that help our research worth best. As a group of students, this
study mainly focused on secondary research, which means data has been existed and published
on various social media or reports or journals and so on collected by people who have their
researches available on social media or the Internet. This method of research is becoming
prevalent in educational research, so it was the reason why this research was used. The goal of
secondary research was to collect existed data on social media, so it brought significantly result
for this study because of its economic, time-saving. Moreover, it provides a basis for comparison
for the data that is collected by others.

1.3 Research question


1. “Evidence-Based Education”: What’s in a Name?
2. To what extent are liberal arts colleges uniquely foster empirically validated good
practices in undergraduate education?
3. What does it entail when liberal arts colleges and education are called “evidence-
based”? Does that mean it is effective or efficient and in what way?
4. Are the net impact of liberal arts colleges or liberal arts education the same for all
students, or do they differ in magnitude for different kinds of students?

1.4 Significance of study


Liberal education is one of the tough topics to study as a liberal art in Vietnam is not much
popular. That is why we decided to study liberal education. This research will help students have
an opportunity and choose a new type of education. It helps us better understand liberal
education, benefits, goals, and limitations. Moreover, this research paper can help teachers to
find new directions or can refer to additional skills development. For us, this study not only helps
us gain more knowledge about liberal education, but it also provides many lessons on thinking.
1.4.1 For students

Almost all students in Viet Nam do not know and even listen about the word “Liberal art
education.” Why? In Viet Nam, Liberal art education is not widespread due to a child have to
learn the traditional, which means children do not have any chance for different kinds of
education. This research provides a large number of bits of knowledge about “ Liberal art
education.” Therefore students will have more chances to choose kinds of universities ,which is a
new kind of university in Viet Nam so that it will bring us many new feelings. Moreover, this
research also helps students to understand more clearly what is liberal art education, what
benefits, how it feels if you study liberal art education, therefore, students can also find out their
dream jobs or new thinking for lives.

1.4.2 For teachers

In Vietnam, liberal education is a new genre that people might not know much about it.
Vietnamese teachers may never know or lack knowledge about this type of education. Therefore,
this study helps teachers gain more knowledge about liberal education. The knowledge of liberal
education is very important; it brings new ideas. Moreover, liberal education learners can do
many different jobs, not just traditional jobs. In Vietnam, teachers play a significant role because
teachers are the ones who guide students. Therefore, it is indispensable to learn and know more
about liberal education.

1.4.3 For researchers

Why is liberal education not accessible in Vietnam? Because there are not many types of
research on this topic. Liberal education is a new and unpopular genre in Vietnam, so our
purpose is to study this topic to disseminate and provide information for anyone to read. What is
a liberal education? Liberal education brings what? Liberal education learn what? Limitations
and benefits are studied in this article. So this research paper not only brings knowledge about
liberal education but also helps readers to understand and make an additional choice for their
lives.
1.5 Organization of report
This chapter presents the essential research components of this study, the data collection,
methods of analyze and procedures. Therefore we have four chapters. Chapter one has back
ground, aim, research question, significance, organization. Chapter two has Theoretical
framework (e.g. Features of curriculum; literary studies), Conceptual framework (i.e. what are
the concepts that the project attempts to focus on - e.g. criteria for comparison). Chapter three
has Methodology: Introduction (about the methods chosen), Data collection, Number of
books/articles/websites surveyed, Selection (i.e. criteria/rationale for the selection), Methods of
analysis: analytical study (based on ;whose&; framework (or) the conceptual framework
mentioned in chapter 2), Procedures: (what are the steps for conducting the study). Chapter four
have Findings & Discussion (i.e. the chapter presents the results found based on the criteria
mentioned in ch.3 and provides discussion of the findings based on ;any ; author(s) or the
“theories” ;given by the researcher. Chapter five: Conclusion and recommendation : Summary of
the study (longer than the abstract), Implications of the study, Limitations of the study (if any),
Recommendations for further studies and references.

Chapter 2 LITERATURE REVIEW


2.1 Definition
As a short sharing view by Robert Shoenberg (2014), the author offered the agreement in some
insight through the citations by George Will: “The term ‘liberal arts’ connotes a specific
elevation above utilitarian concerns. However, liberal education is intensely useful.” Robert
Shoenberg (2014) stated that the two terms “Liberal arts” and “Liberal education” are not
synonymous. From his view, “Liberal arts” refers to specific subjects of study, which may be
pursued to many possible ends. “Liberal education” may be pursued through any subject matter.
However, the term implies distinct purposes: breadth of awareness and appreciation, clarity and
precision of thought and communication, critical analysis, honing of moral and ethical
sensibilities. Therefore, Robert Shoenberg (2014) has redefined education in the liberal arts, and
sciences systems are not a liberal education.

Liberal education was built on two values: “freedom” and “growth.” However, there are
surrounded by controversy by Cronon, W. (1998). However, according to Kimball (1995), a
system of seven liberal arts including quadrivium (arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, and music)
and trivium (grammar, rhetoric, and logic) started its institutional establishment in the middle
ages even though it originated in antiquity. According to Haskins (1957), thanks to an influx of
new knowledge like the significant works of Aristotle, Galen, and Hippocrates, the system was
vastly augmented and delivered in Arabic sources via Span and Italy. The old and new
knowledge combined that gave birth to the learned professions in many universities.

“Liberal arts” originates from the Latin term art liberals. Arts understand as skill and liberals
originate from liber. In general, “liberal arts” means “skills of outstanding citizen” or “skills of
the domination class. Similarly, liberal arts education nowadays is popular and outstanding
realized at a small urban liberal arts college. College gives a variety of general curriculum as
well as majors in sciences and the arts Roche, M. (2013). As a result, analysts completing a think
about liberal arts education looked to recognize learning results related to both shrewdness and
citizenship. They have synthesized these themes into seven results that encourage compelling
understudy learning and advancement King (2007)

2.2 Goal
First of all, liberal education trains students with a variety of abilities to adapt to employer
requirements. (Porter, L., & Huber, J. Is a Liberal Arts Education Still Relevant in Today's
World?). Besides, Schmitz (1993) states that American universities have affirmed that they will
enable students to have access to liberal arts education. These are the practical promise for
everyone that both students and administrators Delucchi, M. (1997).

Consequently, becoming engaged citizens, thinking critically, motivating the students' desire and
capacity to learn, communicating proficient are the core missions of a modern liberal arts
education. The educational method focus on students that allow students to choose their own
choices and demands. Yang, R. (2016).

The second point is that Shirley Tilghman (2015) assumed that liberal arts universities and
colleges have two specific and essential missions in terms of sciences, such as to create new ages
of scientists and to teach citizens with scientific background Becker.J. (2015). The purposes of a
liberal arts education have advanced to superior meet societal requests by reflecting the differing
and changing needs of modern society, which liberal education ought to include "a cultivation of
the total human being for the capacities of citizenship and life generally" Nussbaum (1997).

Finally, supporting proof for each result from trade and government leaders, faculty, and college
understudies, which recommends that there is impressive agreement around the significance of
these results King (2007).

2.3 Advantages of liberal art education


The teaching profession is a profession with functional evaluation of preferential regimes. In
public schools, teachers with professional qualifications in their subjects will be invited to teach.
Unlike in New York State, half of the teachers did not pass the mandated literacy test Taylor
(2019). Furthermore, the mission of liberal arts is creating civic and social leaders. Students and
instructors with academic materials are the core value.

Moreover, it helps students build critical mindset by analysis and synthesis of many different
disciplines. Liberal art is a valuable curriculum, interdisciplinary studies. Students can see the
integration among subjects. Nowadays, Liberal arts is now useful for many fields such as study
abroad, academic exploration and synthesis in research, and so on. Derreth, R. T. (2017).

Another benefit is that there is hope for liberal arts as a new trend. Liberal arts take a place to
create more critical thinking to catch up the speed of the innovation. The range of learning's limit
is broader in the practical, vocational curriculum, etc. Liberal arts promise to help the student
have a mindset that can solve, analysis problems of students in the job market and society today
Derreth, R. T. (2017). Moreover, according to the data of graduates working status, the report
shows that liberal arts graduates are ready to gain success over their courses in their life.

Students who follow their dream majors may gain success in the future. Liberal arts provides
knowledge and critical thinking and reasoning skills, analyzing and solving problems. This
report has a trending broad, but people should go to college to find out their strengths and
weakness or even career goals. Income level is not the only tool to measure the success of a
person. In life, there are many elements better than money. Humphries, D., & Kelly, P. (2014).
How liberal arts and sciences majors fare in employment. Washington, DC: Association of
American Colleges & Universities and National Center for Higher Education Management
Systems. Although liberal arts colleges are the world apart from for-profit educational
institutions, the latter has much to teach small universities about efficiency, efficiency, and asset
utilization Stimpert, J. L. (2004).

Liberal qualities: students can be developed in many skills. Listen and hear, read and understand,
talk with anyone, write clearly and persuasively and movingly, solve a wide variety of puzzles
and problems, respect rigor not so much, practice humility, tolerance, and self-criticism,
understand how to get things done, nurture and empower and "only connect" Cronon, W. (1998).
Also, liberal art is a kind of high education dedicated to students to prepare them to become
function citizens by learning, thinking critically, and openly and the ability to communicate
effectively, according to Becker.J.(2015).

In contemporary times, preparing learners to work in vibrant social and economic settings goes
beyond this. Liberal arts wager is that students' love for learning, the ability to think critically,
and the ability to communicate effectively are more priceless than the depth of knowledge in one
subject in the course of their lives. These characteristics are crucial in enabling graduates to
adapt to changing social and economic circumstances and assist them to continue growing,
learning and adapting to altering circumstances long after they have left the academic halls
Becker.J. (2015). In addition to that, Zakaria emphasizes three advantages of liberal arts about
personal development. First, it helps educate how to think, how to write, and writing makes
learners think Becker J. (2015).

We have more specific advantages from liberal arts. Firstly, liberal arts gives students the
knowledge to discover evocative and profound questions involving issues that attract their desire
for knowledge and how its relevance to life. A liberal arts education teaches students a bunch of
intellectual virtues, competence to listen, strong evidence, analyze. It makes students widespread
their creativity. Secondly, liberal arts give students the competence to get into a conversation
effectively, solve flexible problems, and think clearly. The third one is that liberal arts make
students solve a question that makes them develop critical thinking skills. Another one is that
liberal arts education motivates individuals, though, that fosters students to challenge ideas.
Next, liberal arts pupils cultivate an impressed in ideas and smart for their own. They will
develop competence and skills through the learning process. Also, liberal arts focus on realizing
one's responsibilities to those ideals, articulating ideals that awakening their senses of wonder
about oneself future possibilities. Moreover, liberal arts pupils are motivated to ask like how they
do with their abilities and interests. To sum up, Liberal arts helps students explore who they are
and how they should do to their life Roche, M. W. (2013).

Distinctive next-generation service and learning programs will be designed on the service and
learning typology. It develops a service ethic in which all participants will be fostered to
maximize their abilities to be better Sigmon, R. L. (1997).

Liberal arts education is one of the most excellent options for students because it recommends
knowledgeable books of music, science, and philosophy, which makes learners more inventive
and improving but still keeps the real situation. Therefore, the benefits of liberal arts education
are new ideas, creative thoughts, and imaginations in the form of studying methods. Students can
anticipate future results concerning the economy and culture. Even though it is difficult to get
knowledge, we must do it. Liberal arts context forms flexibility and intelligence, but sometimes
we can learn from its risk Roth, M. (2008).

2.4 Disadvantages of liberal art education


Liberal arts education encounters serious problems. Critics say that the rich who have a job-ready after
graduation want to study specialized subjects that are more suitable for future jobs than a liberal
education. Besides, leaders of political support the STEM careers disciplines and view them as university
subjects. (Porter, L., & Huber, J. Is a Liberal Arts Education Still Relevant in Today’s World?). What
complicates the process of creating an identity is the possibility that the unique characteristics and
elements of the school will not enjoy the same purchase in the constituencies Stimpert, J. L. (2004). The
next one is financing liberal arts colleges. In liberal arts colleges, they have often been labor-intensive,
not enough employees. During many years, many small colleges become increasingly capital intensive.
There are many things that education required, and students hope Stimpert, J. L. (2004). Additionally,
the list course, in liberal education is very complicated. Therefore they become too much for liberal
students Cronon, W. (1998).

Accordant to Beck (2012), based on East Asian education, liberal arts education would not be a secure
system to accept. “With deep indigenous roots and be available to a large number of students, can
liberal arts education develop on its own?” is a vast question of many people. Despite their strikingly
different roots, there are some similar challenges that liberal arts education in both the West and East
Asia faces as a consequence of globalization Yang, R. (2016).
Chapter 3: RESEARCH METHOD
3.1 Introduction
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic formation of liberal art and some aspects that
liberal arts have brought to students. This study was conducted by a small group of students
based on available research. T We can find there are many types of data support a study and
make it more reliable on the Internet like primary data, secondary data. It depends on the
research scale, so we can absolutely choose one data that help our research worth best. As a
group of students, this study mainly focused on secondary research, which means data has been
existed and published on various social media or reports or journals and so on collected by
people who have their researches available on social media or the Internet. This method of
research is becoming prevalent in educational research, so it was the reason why this research
was used. The goal of secondary research was to collect existed data on social media, so it really
brought significantly result for this study because of its economic, time-saving. Moreover, it
provides a basis for comparison for the data that is collected by others.

3.2 Data collection


The methodology for this study based on materials that have already been existed on the
Internet. It includes books, articles surveyed, and so on. This report was conducted by a group of
six members; the materials had carefully selected. All the materials included books, articles near
approximately thirty-six to support this report. Moreover, it must be balanced between the
number of books and articles so it could bring feasibility results for this report.

With a variety of information on the Internet, choosing an article or a book to get the
information might cause difficulties. So it must be fabricated a standard for choosing those
materials to serve a report. This study mainly focused on liberal arts so the central keyword for
searching the materials on articles, book and websites were “liberal arts” or some keywords
related to the title such as “Liberal arts colleges,” “Key benefits of liberal arts”…. all relevant
data to be collected.
3.3 Methods of analysis:
The materials used in this report were taken from articles that had the most cited books
which had full needed content to serve this research. Moreover, all the documents have been
existed and researched for many years ago were selected.

Chapter 4: FINDING & DISCUSSION


4.1 Introduction
Liberal arts education was defined as an essential educative program for a free individual in
society. It is biased to develop fundamental knowledge and soft skills. In another way, liberal art
students have opportunities to meet various subjects or majors in different fields instead of
digging further on only one subject. “Liberal Arts” is for wide-ranging training programs. Each
subject is a combination of every single field, such as humanities, social science, and natural
sciences. Therefore, our careers are varied and open instead of focusing on a major, a solid
foundation of knowledge across a range of fields will give you more career options. The subjects
are taught at Liberal Arts are what exactly students need to know, helping us draw a picture of
careers later without going into depth, students still know the necessary information to decide
their favorite path. Furthermore, the broad and fundamental knowledge gained while studying at
Liberal Arts will help you move from your current career path to a whole new career. All we will
become global citizens after achieving specialist knowledge from liberal arts education even
though we change our careers from the primary major to the new one, we still have enough
abilities, skills, experiences and so on.

4.2 Practices of liberal art education
Universities have applied liberal education into the curriculum by the following methods:
Prioritize intellectual education over specialized education; Combining theory and practice,
extra-curricular and theoretical sessions for students; Create value for students both inside and
outside the school Seifert, T. A. (2008). Therefore, Robert Shoenberg (2014) gave his adjustment
of liberal education in the liberal arts, a school that is purposefully composed to develop
significant and forthcoming powers and a sense of the complexity and variety of the world, is the
best compound for work, citizenship, and life Shoenberg, R. (2009). Because of its mission,
Liberal arts has its stage in the 21st century. Some professors translate it and masking them as
the innovation in education. Some liberal art characteristics were focusing on action and thinking
of students, faculty, or reform them for the 21st century. Liberal art is now expanding its mission
Derreth, R. T. (2017).

The book begins with an introduction to the arguments that the humanitarian crisis has been
exaggerated. The support of the funds of government and universities for liberal arts is
decreasing, which leads us to change in the future. Their book introduces some ways or “new
deal” that people should follow to have liberal art “healthy and balance” The scholars propose
three programs, a substantial capital, allowing the creation of a separate and creative study
program with academic programs. Some first chapters are about the history of humanities and
liberal arts and focus on two interference of government: the Morrill Act of 1862, which
established land-grant universities, and the GI Bill in 1944, which made a university education
attainable to a large number of the middle class. These two chapters remind readers that the side
always sides humanities and public institutions. Land-grant universities were meant “to provide
liberal and practical education of the industrial classes” It is genuinely public because they bring

institutions. During time governments limited their funds, the federal government is protecting

Creating and doing many exclusive research projects in four semesters is a massive challenge for
small liberal arts university in a rural Health Professions Shortage Area (HPSA) with the new
BSN program. HPSAs are standards of the shortages in healthcare providers. Undergraduate
research emerges as a new trend with the low faculty fund on the campus. Most of the faculty are
creating their research program, which educated for both students and faculty. This article shows
the process used for undergraduate research in the BSN program. Students work in small groups
under-control of instructors can make a plan, do and present what they been done in front of the
university community in the nursing curriculum. Research course faculty is the mentor for those
who have less experience. Projects were created to improve healthcare for people in HPSA Long,
A., Bischoff, W. R., & Aduddell, K. (2018).

4.3 Prospects of liberal art education


Today jobs require a college or university graduates who need specialized skills and knowledge
rather than liberal education, so they need to change and break social barriers. For the next
generation of children will continue their exploration and improvement of liberal education
(Porter, L., & Huber, J. Is a Liberal Arts Education Still Relevant in Today’s World?). The
development of liberal arts education is constrained because it is uncommon in society, to
improve the sentiment of liberal art education it must be pointed out that it is the best, most
necessary and grant it to all students to use Blaich C., Bost A., Chan E. & Lynch R. (2012).

As reported by Logan, J., & Curry, J. (2014), they had mentioned two vital ideas of Orators and
Philosophers, Bruce Kimball (1995). One is liberal education can be seen as a longstanding
argumentation between the two classical models; one is from in Ciceronian oratorical dictates,
and the second is in Platonic philosophical pursuits. Base on the two classical models above,
Nussbaum (1997) had stated that these two classical models were instrumental in transferring the
shape to many of the standard features in modern American higher education, which making
liberal education complete. Kimball (1995) also claims that learning is prescribed along broad
lines and requires “the surrendering of one’s personal view for the sake of consensus within the
community of academicians” (p. 238).
These challenges seem particularly uncomfortable and ironic for those of us committed to liberal
arts education. We have found in our own experience and our associates that the essential
competencies gained from liberal arts education are best suited to life in the rapidly changing
world. A world requires continued commitment to lifelong learning and development. A world is
controlled by technological, scientific, and professional elites struggling with issues beyond their
professional boundaries, seeking ideas, ethical principle virtue, and understand the state of our
being that seeks to thrive in students. Empirical learning theory provides the basis for a
framework for uniting the people we teach, the ways we teach, and for what purpose we teach in
a teaching-learning situation. Individual learner styles can be related to preferred learning
situations, and adaptive capacity can be related to both learner style and environmental
orientation. Together, these factors can then be analyzed in a way that provides a descriptive
impact profile: specific educational courses, programs, or events while this is a significant step
forward Fry, R., & Kolb, D. (1979).

4.4 Limit of liberal art education


Two caveats of a liberal education: the first is that Liberal education is misleading because of the
way of living in the face, the way of groping toward wisdom, the way of educating ourselves
with our illusion that we will even complete all in education. The second is that students in
liberal education have many difficulties because their course cannot provide enough about the
fact skills Cronon, W. (1998).

These challenges seem particularly uncomfortable and ironic for those of us committed to liberal
arts education. We have found in our own experience and our associates that the essential
competencies gained from liberal arts education are best suited to life in the rapidly changing
world. A World requires continued commitment to lifelong learning and development. A world
controlled by technological, scientific, and professional elites struggling with issues beyond their
professional boundaries, seeking ideas, ethical principles virtue, and understand the state of our

Chapter 5: CONCLUSION
Liberal education was built on two values: “freedom” and “growth.” However, there are
surrounded by controversy. (Cronon, W. (1998). Liberal arts education is an essential educative
program for a free individual in society. It develops fundamental knowledge and soft skills,
which helps students have opportunities to meet various fields such as humanities, social science,
and natural sciences. Liberal arts is now useful for many fields such as study abroad, academic
exploration, and synthesis in research (Derreth, R. T. (2017).The necessary competencies gained
from liberal arts education are best suited to life in the rapidly changing world. A good liberal
education is a tool for students to focus on freedom and creative in work after graduation. It
helps students become innovators and productive risk-takers, bringing ideals become a practical
reality in working environments. Liberal arts gives students the knowledge to discover evocative
and profound questions involving issues that attract their desire for knowledge and how its
relevance to life. Liberal arts context forms flexibility and intelligence, but sometimes we can
learn from its risk (Roth, 2008) Liberal arts helps students explore who they are and how they
should do to their life (Roche, M. W. (2013) Liberal art education must be pointed out that it is
the best, most necessary and grant it to all students to use

The purpose of this study was to provide the basic formation of liberal art and aspects that liberal
arts have brought to students. This study mainly focused on secondary research, which means
data has been existed and published on various social media or reports or journals and so on
collected by people who have their researches available on social media or the Internet.
