Case 1
1. Transactional Model of Communication

Scene 1-Part 1: Disagreement. Scene 1-Part 2: Agreement

Scene 2: The group work process. Scene 3: Group project problem

Scene 4: Last Meeting

As shown in the scenes, the problem started when Lee ended up agreeing with the
majority, causing a series of problems that became a bomb to the team members during the last
meeting.

2. Constitutive Model of Communication

Based on the Constitutive Model of Communications, communication is the

fundamental activity in life that creates the central forces in society. For the group to

produce a successful output, the team leader should be a great communicator. Such a

leader can reduce or avoid conflicts, such as in the scenario.

However, what makes a good communicator? From what I learned, one must first

build relationships--both personally and professionally--with peers or subordinates. When

a leader builds such relationships, it opens the doors to various successful practices. One

practice that successful communicators do is: listen more than speak and understand what

people are saying. They should frequently ask questions to allow people to share their

knowledge and express their opinions, helping them understand people's thoughts and

make people feel that what they say truly matters.

In the scenario, the leader failed to make Lee feel like his words mattered,

pressuring him to go along with what the majority chose. The leader should have asked

him to explain his thoughts in a more detailed way so that everyone could understand and

consider his ideas as a good option. Unfortunately, that did not happen, causing Lee to

lose interest in the group work.

Another practice a good communicator should do is to pay attention to nonverbal

communication and be aware of misunderstandings. Leaders should keep an eye on the

voice tones, alignment of words, body language, and facial expressions. If any of these

verbal and nonverbal communication aspects lack consistency, communication becomes

a disaster.
Due to the fact that Lee sat silently during meetings and contributed minimally, it

showed that he was giving nonverbal feedback to the group. However, the team members

weren't able to notice it the entire time, causing Lee to leave the team during the last

meeting.
