Learning objectives : By the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to,

(i) To name at least three directions correctly


(ii) Listen to teacher’s instructions and show at
least 7 out of 9 the direction signs correctly
(iii) Tell the directions to places by looking at the
map/s given.
(iv) Share the directions to places in school by using
the focus words appropriately.
(v) Listen to the directions and comprehend the
instructions by doing the activity

Set Induction

The New Teacher

1. Teacher possesses as a new teacher and asks the pupils the directions to the
canteen.
2. Students respond by giving simple directions.
3. Teacher introduces the topic of the day.

Presentation

Activity 1

1. Teacher introduces the focus words such as turn right, turn left, walk straight, first
exit, second exit, third exit, roundabout, junction and lane using pictures.
2. Pupils repeat the words they hear using correct pronunciations.
3. Teacher regroups pupils into groups of 4.
4. Teacher hands out the direction signs in envelopes to each group.
5. Teacher says the word and the pupils show the correct direction sign.
6. Teacher teaches the focus words explicitly.

Practice
Activity 1

1. Teacher displays a simple map on the screen and asks pupils (individually) to tell the
directions to various places on the map.
2. Pupils participate actively.
3. Teacher displays a complex map that requires the use of all the focus words and asks
pupils to give the directions accordingly.
4. Teacher checks the use of the words and guides pupils along the process.

Production

Scavenger’s Hunt

1. Teacher regroups pupils into groups of 4.


2. Teacher assigns a place in the school to each group, for example, the library.
3. Each group must write down the directions to the place in a piece of paper by going
there.
4. Pupils share the directions to the class.
5. Teacher checks pupils’ works.

Closure

1. Teacher hands out blank maps to pupils.


2. Teacher says the directions using the focus words.
3. Pupils trace the directions by listening to the teacher’s instructions.
4. Teacher selects a few pupils to read the directions they traced.
5. Teacher praises pupils for their hard work.
