Polarization in dielectric
• Dielectric posses no free charge that can move when electric field is applied
• All charge are bounded to their atoms and when an electric field is applied
positive charges goes one way and negative charge goes the opposite direction
• A dielectric in which this displacement has taken place is called polarized.
• We can classify this dielectric as polar and non polar

Conductor –Dielectric boundary condition

Conductor –Dielectric boundary condition
• For conductors we can say that

1. No electric field may exist within a conductor; that is, ρv = 0, E =

0
2. Since E = −∇V = 0 V = const, there can be no potential
difference between any two points in the conductor; that is, a
conductor is an equipotential body.
3. The electric field E can be external to the conductor and normal
to

its surface, viz.,
4. Conductors can be used for electrostatic screening or shielding.
