Introduction
Originally developed by James Clerk
Maxwell (1864) and later refined by Otto
Mohr and Muller Breslau. It is also known as
the Force Method or Compatibility Method.
The method consists of writing the
compatibility
tibilit and
d fforce-displacement
di l t
equations for the structure in order to
determine the redundant forces.

Introduction (cont’d)
When the redundant forces have been
determined, the remaining reactions can be
determined by using equations of
equilibrium.

General Procedure:
P
(a) Actual Beam
A B
= By
P
B (b) Primary Structure
A ∆B
+
∆B’=By fBB
A B
By (c) Redundant By applied

(d) Unit Force applied at B

From figs. (a) through (c), the necessary

compatibility equation at B can be written as:
-∆B + ∆BB’ = 0 ( +) ………………..(1)
If the displacement at B caused by a unit force in the
direction of By is denoted by fBB (fig. c), we can
write:
∆BB’ = By fBB ………………………………(2)
Equation (1) can be written as:
-∆B + By fBB = 0 ……………….………….(3)
Or By = ∆B / fBB

Thus the redundant By can be determined for ∆B and

fBB. The term fBB is called the linear flexibility
coefficient.
Alternatively, choosing the moment at A as the

Compatibility for rotation at A:

θA + αAA = 0
Or MA = - θA / αAA
The –ve sign indicates that MA acts in the opposite
direction to the unit couple.
