2020’s Roaring New Year’s Resolutions

What you need to know when making a New Year’s Resolution

Hey fellow Grizzlies! It’s time to shake last year off and start fresh. As you begin this new
semester you might be asking yourself, what can I do differently this year to make it and myself
better, and you’re not the only one.

New Year’s resolutions have been around for about 4000 years, since the ancient Babylonians
started the new year by returning things borrowed or paying their debts. Then, the Romans
would make promises to the God Janus, the God which the month January is named after. As
human beings we’re always trying to grow and be better, New Year’ resolutions are just a way
for us to do that.

As progress looks different for everyone, don’t worry about what your goals look like compared
to other peoples’. While some might want to get in shape, others might want to get all A’s this
quarter. Whatever success looks like for you, go for it! Senior, Trevor Tucker’s New Year’s
resolution was to get more sleep, be a friend to everyone, and be someone people can rely on.
He is just one example of people who want to be a little kinder and a little healthier this year.

On average though, only about 25% of people stay committed to their goal past January and
only about 8% of people accomplish them. However do not let this statistic deter you from your
goals and ambitions for the year. Most people don’t accomplish their goal because they forget
about them, or they think just because they messed up once on it that it’s time to give up. Don’t
do this, it’s okay if you mess up because there’s still the rest of the year to get it right. The point
of New Year’s resolutions is to make the whole year a better and more successful one for you -
keep pushing to make it happen.

Some ways for you to accomplish your goals include: making sure your goal is realistic and
attainable, outlining your goal for the whole year, making small goals that are a part of your
main goal, rewarding yourself when you accomplish those goals, tracking your progress on your
phone or in a journal, talking about your goal to other people, making a pros and cons list of why
this goal is good for you, and lastly never giving up your drive that keeps you moving towards a
better you.

Your resolutions are important to becoming the person you want to be, and the year 2020 is a
great place to start. Make this year the best you ever have. Keep the end in mind Grizzlies, and
don’t give up hope that you can accomplish anything you want to in life. Best of luck to your
goals and be sure to have an amazing year!
