Interpersonal Communication is much more than the explicit meaning of words, the
information or message conveyed. It also includes implicit messages, whether intentional or
not, which are expressed through non-verbal behaviors.

VERBAL COMMUNICATION

 The sharing of information between individuals by using speech.

 Individuals working within a business need to effectively use verbal communication that
employs readily understood spoken words, as well as ensuring that the enunciation,
stress and tone of voice with which the words are expressed is appropriate.

USAGE EXAMPLES

 The company used memos as a way to communicate with the workers at large but
management had found using more verbal communication better at resolving conflicts or
problems.

 You need to have strong verbal communication skills if you want to be able to move up
in most any business job.

 They had good verbal communication with each other and would always be able to pick
up on how the other one is feeling.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

 This includes facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, gestures displayed
through body language and the physical distance between the communicators.

 These non-verbal signals can give clues and additional information and meaning over
and above spoken communication.

TYPES OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

The types of interpersonal communication that are not expressed verbally (with speech)
are called non-verbal communications.

 Body Movements (Kinesics) – hand gestures, touching (haptics) or nodding or shaking

the head.

 Posture – how you stand or sit, whether your arms are crossed or not.

 Eye Contact – the amount of eye contact often determines the level of trust and
trustworthiness.

 Para-language – aspects of the voice apart from speech, such as pitch, tone, speed of
speaking.

b. Video Digestion
This time, class, you are going to watch a video
about verbal and non-verbal communication to
understand more. Please be quiet in viewing the
video.

C. Understanding
a. Generalization
Class, based on the discussion and the video
you watched, what is the function of verbal
communication? Verbal communication helps us
express out inner thoughts,
ma’am. It helps us expound
clearly and deliver the essence of
the message we are wishing to
convey.

Very good! Now, who can tell me what the

significance of non-verbal communication is? Non-verbal communication helps
us to express the things that
verbal communication cannot.

That’s right! Then if we have verbal

communication, why do we need non-verbal
communication? How do they differ? Non-verbal communication
differs from verbal
communication in a way that it
needs not to be spoken. There are
matters that we don’t have to say
but we wished that the other
person should know.

Which is more important and should-be used,

verbal or non-verbal communication? I think both have significant roles,
ma’am because they have
different functions.

Very good! Both have significant functions

and could be used when having as conversation with
other people to clearly relay the message we want to
convey.

Now that you’ve already learned about the
