INTRODUCTION

Farming has been one of the Philippines’ major occupations and it is the source of income
for many Filipinos, along with fishing. Given the vast farm lands in central parts of Luzon, the
Filipinos also have found ways to cultivate even the steepest mountains, (e.g. Ifugao). About 5.51
million Filipinos relay on farming. That being said, the information gathered in this experiment
may be of use to these Filipino farmers.

This activity involves the planting of seed in a controlled experiment, with three cans all
being exposed to the same amount of sunlight and watered the same amount of water, the number
of scoops of fertilizer vary (CAN 1 has no fertilizer, CAN 2 has 10 scoops of fertilizer and CAN
3 has 20 scoops of fertilizer) to know how much fertilizer produces the best plant, is it none, too
much, or too little?

The growth time will last up to 2 week and will be recorded every day. The harvest will
be weighed and measured in order to know which of the can grow the healthiest and best plant.

In this paper you will find,

- A hypothesis,
- 2 summary tables for the final weight of the plants, one for the pre-drying and one
post-drying,
- 1 summary table for the height of the plants,
- 1 table for the photo documentation of the plants’ growth,
- A results and interpretation,
- A conclusion,
- An answer to the guide questions;
- And an experiment documentation

ACTIVITY 1.1 Too
Much or Too Little?

Materials:
- 3 cans or pots*
- 15 pieces of seed of choice*

- Cow manure*
- Loamy soil*
- Water**
- Ruler***
- Weighing scale***

* to be used during the preparation and actual planting

** to be used during growing process
*** to be used after harvesting and drying process

Procedure:
1. Prepare the pots, make sure each pot has holes in the bottom to serve as passage way for excess water.
2. Add soil to the pots, just a little more than the half, add fertilizer to the can, REMEMBER that CAN 1
has no fertilizer, 1 has fertilizer, and the last one has double the amount. In our case we choose to add
10 scoops to CAN 2 and 20 to CAN 3 to ensure the nourishment of the plants.
3. Observe the plants for 2 week, watering them with the same amount and exposing them to sunlight
everyday.
4. When it is time for the harvest, weigh each plant and record them on the table. Measure their heights as
well.
5. Expose the harvested plants to sunlight for a day and leave them overnight. Weigh them again. Record
your finding on the table.

HYPOTHESES

General Hypotheses:

The amount of fertilizer will have a significant effect to the plants’ growth and development. The
more the fertilizer the more rapid the growth and the plants become healthier, the fewer the fertilizer the
slower the growth of the plants.

CAN 1 (No Fertilizer)

The plants on this can will grow at a much slower rate and will have less healthier plants, because
it is deprived of any nourishment from a fertilizer, nevertheless plants will still grow because of the
natural minerals on the soil.

CAN 2 (10 Scoops of Fertilizer)

The plants will grow at a faster rate than the Can 1, and will have healthy plants, because it is
supported by the nutrients and minerals on the fertilizer, the added nutrients on the soil by the fertilizer
will aid in a faster growth of plants.

CAN 3 (20 Scoops of Fertilizer)

The plants here will grow the fastest and will be the healthiest as well. The abundance of
nutrients from the fertilizer combined in the soul will aid the fast growing and development of plants.

Table 1.1 : The final weight of each plant in grams in every can after 2 weeks and the averaged
weight of the plants per can

This table is the final weight of every plant in grams after the two weeks of growing. Right after
they were harvested, the group weighed the plant and used grams to measure the weight. A digital
weighing scale was used for this process. After all the plants were weighed and the data was recorded on
the table, the group computed for the average weight of plants in CAN 1 ( No Fertilizer) which was 0.47
grams, CAN 2 (10 Scoops) which was 0.66 grams and in CAN 3 (20 scoops) which was 0.79 grams.

Table 1.2 : The final weight of each plant in grams in every can after drying in the sun for a day
and the averaged weight of the plants per can after the drying process

This table is the final weight of every piece of plant in grams after the leaving them in the sun to
dry for a day. They were rested overnight and were weighed. The drying process lets the plant remove
their water weight leaving them fragile and almost like ash. The digital scale used before was used again
for this process. After the recording of data, the group then computed for the average weight of plants
without their water weight. CAN 1 (No Fertilizer) was 0.05 g, CAN 2 (10 scoops) was 0.098 g and CAN
3 (20 scoops) was 0.11 g.

Table 1.3 : The final height of each plant in grams in every can after 2 weeks and the averaged
height of the plants per can

This table shows the final height of plants after the 2 week growing process. Right after they
were harvested, the group measured the height of each plant, from the very beginning of the stem to the
end. The roots were excluded in this measurement. After the measurement and recording of the data, the
group then computed for the average of the height of plants on every can being CAN 1 as 200 cm, CAN 2
as 229 cm and CAN 3 as 265 cm.

RESULTSANDINTERPRETATION

The tables above have shown the results of this experiment and are very coherent with one
another. The first can which had no fertilizer produced plants that weighed least among the cans with an
average of 0.47 grams, pre-drying and 0.5 g post-drying. It also produced the shortest plants, averaging at
200 cm. This must be due to the fewer nutrition and minerals because it only had soil and no fertilizer.

The second can on the other hand had results somewhere in between the two other cans. It
averaged 0.66 g in weight pre-drying and 0.098 post-drying. The same is true with the height, with the
average of 229 cm, it was definitely greater than the first can because it has the aid nutrition of the
fertilizer and the first can didn’t have, and it is lesser than the third can because it had more fertilizer in it.

The third can had the healthiest plants, easy to say. They weighed highest, averaging at 0.79 grams
pre-drying and 0.11 grams post-drying. They also have the highest plants, averaging at 265 cm. This
shows that this can has the heaviest and highest plants among the three cans, after having the most amount
of fertilizer mixed in the soil.

CONCLUSION

In this experiment, we planted mung seed on 3 pots and treated them all the same, giving the same
amount of water and exposing them to the same amount of sunlight, except for the amount of fertilizer.
The first can had no fertilizer, the second had 10 scoops of fertilizer and the third had 20 scoops of
fertilizer. The varying amount of fertilizer will show in how much fertilizer should one put to achieve the
fastest growth of plants.

The results have proved our hypothesis that the amount of fertilizer had a significant effect on
each plant, the more the fertilizer the faster the growth of plants and the lesser, the slower. The one with
most number of scoops of fertilizer grew faster and as shown on our tables weighed more than most of the
plants. Even after the removal of its water weight and content, it still weighed most.

This easily proves that fertilizers are needed to support the growth of our plants. As Filipinos we
relay heavily on agriculture as on of our country’s source of income. If we take part and conduct more
experiments like this, we may be able to help our farmers to cultivate the land and produce healthier
produce for all of us.

GUIDEQUESTIONS

1. What is the experimental design of this experiment? Summarize by constructing a flowchart below.

2. How can the results of your experiment apply in real case scenario, such as farmland in the Philippines?

The use of cow manure in the Philippines as fertilizer is already very rampant. Being not costly

and can be found everywhere it is used by farmers everywhere, but as the years go by and technology

become more present in everything that we do, these traditional methods in farming such as using manure

slowly start disappearing and are being replaced by inorganic ones. We hope that through this experiment

we are able to let some farmers know that animal manure is still an effective fertilizer just like the

chemical ones, and aren’t harmful like the ones that are inorganic.
