PCHM 121: Pharmaceutical Inorganic Chemistry with Qualitative Analysis

1st Semester of A.Y. 2020-2021

Title
Chapter 4: Inorganic Reactions
Introduction

Many chemical reactions can be classified as one of five basic types. Having
a thorough understanding of these types of reactions will be useful for predicting
the products of an unknown reaction. The five basic types of chemical reactions
are combination, decomposition, single-replacement, double replacement, and
combustion. Analyzing the reactant and products of a given reaction will allow you
to place it into one of these categories. Some reactions will fit into more than one
category. Identifying a reaction as one of these types does not preclude it from
also being an oxidation-reduction (redox) reaction. For example, many
combination reactions can also be classified as a redox reaction.

Presentation of Outcomes

Having successfully completed this lesson the student must have:

1. Evaluated a reaction as combination, decomposition, single replacement, double
replacement or combustion reaction.

Warm-up Activity
Question…
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you want to have with
you?
Central Activities

Learning Input 1 (Lecture)

Types of Inorganic Reactions

1. Synthesis Reaction/Combination Reactions occur when two simple substances
combine and form a single compound.
• General formula: reactant + reactant à product

1
A + B à AB

• Example:
- Formation of water

2H2 + O2 à 2H2O

- Formation of carbon dioxide

C + O2 à CO2

2. Decomposition reactions are opposite of synthesis reactions. They occur when a

compound breaks up into simpler compounds.
• General formula Product à reactant + reactant

AB à A + B

• Example:
- Decomposition of water

2H2O à 2H2 + O2

- Decomposition of HgO

2HgO à 2Hg + O2

3. Single Replacement Reactions occur when one element replaces another in a

compound.
• General formula: element + compound à compound + element

A + BC à AC + B

A + BC à BA + C

• Example:

Fe + CuSO4 à FeSO4 + Cu
Mg + 2HCl à MgCl2 + H2

4. Double Replacement Reactions occur when a metal replaces a metal in a compound

and a nonmetal replaces a nonmetal in a compound forming two NEW COMPOUNDS.
• General formula: compound + compound à compound + compound

AB + CD à AD + CB

2
• Example:

AgNO3 + NaCl à AgCl + NaNO3

K2SO4 + Ba(NO3)2 à KNO3 + BaSO4

5. Combustion Reactions occur when a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen gas to produce
carbon dioxide and water.
• It usually liberates a lot of heat energy and is accompanied by flame. It is typically
referred to as “burning”.
• General formula:

CxHy + O2 à CO2 + H2O

• Examples:

C5H12 + O2 à CO2 + H2O

C10H8 + O2 à CO2 + H2O

course page on September 15, 2020, 1:00 PM.

Learning Input 2 (Laboratory)

• Post laboratory discussion of the previous laboratory activities.
Wrap-Up Activity
1. Discussion Forum (Open-ended questions)
• You are expected to participate in the discussion forum scheduled on
September 28, 2020 (unless otherwise rescheduled), Monday via the mVLE
BIGBlueButtonBN or ZOOM.
• An invitation link will be available in the mVLE course site.
• Open-ended questions will be asked randomly among students during the
discussion proper.
• In addition, students are also given opportunity to ask/raise any question or
make clarifications during the discussion.

Assessment (Post-Assessment)
Problem-Based Learning Task 4
Worksheet
• A detailed instruction will be available in the mVLE course page assignment portal
on September 15, 2020, 1:00 PM.
• Submit your output on or before 11:59 pm, September 120, 2020 (Sunday), 11:59
PM via the same portal in mVLE.

3
Laboratory-Based Learning Task 4
• Post Laboratory exam will be given after the post laboratory discussion.
Online Exam 3
• You are required to take the Post-Test on the topic learned.
• The link will be posted on September 21, 2020 (Monday) after the discussion forum
in the mVLE Quiz Portal.
• Accomplish and submit the said exam on or before 11:59 PM on the same date.
