GROUP NO. 59

THESIS STATEMENT:
However, playing video games does not really give bad impact to the children because there is some
evidence showing that video games can develop cognitive skills and improve the intergroup relations in
daily life.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1

OPPOSING VIEW:
Opposing views claim that video games addiction gives detrimental impact on children’s health especially
slowing down their brain growth.

SUPPORTING POINT (OPPOSING VIEW):

This is because when the children playing video games in long hours a day, they tend to lose
concentration ability on their studies. So, it will probably make your children less knowledgeable either
about academics or current issues.

TOPIC SENTENCE 1 (REBUTTAL ARGUMENT):

However, playing video games surprisingly help in developing cognitive skills especially when the
children are playing an action game.

SUPPORTING POINT 1 (REBUTTAL ARGUMENT):

Without realising, the children always solve the problem inside the game by making decision and process
information quickly. It is one of the reasons that how video games can improve the children’s cognitive
skills.

SUPPORTING DETAIL 1: EXAMPLES/ FACTS/ STATISTICS

For example, a recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study found that the mechanisms
that control attention allocation (e.g., the fronto-parietal network) were less active during a chal- lenging
pattern-detection task in regular gamers than in nongamers, leading the researchers to suggest that
shooter game players allocate their attentional resources more ef- ficiently and filter out irrelevant
information more effec- tively (Bavelier, Achtman, Mani, & Föcker, 2012).

PARAPHRASE OF THE EXCERPT:

Bavelier, Achtman, Mani and Föcker (2012) stated that recent analysis of functional magnetic resonance
imaging (fMRI) showed that the processes that control attention allocation such as the frontoparietal
network were less involved in daily gamers than in non-gamers during a difficult pattern detection
challenge. It leading the researchers to conclude that shooter game players distribute their attention
resources more efficiently and screen out irrelevant knowledge.
BODY PARAGRAPH 2

OPPOSING VIEW:
Another claim made by the opposition is many children tend to playing video games by themselves in
their room and this action indirectly limits the children’s interpersonal skills in real life and will make them
become anti-social.

SUPPORTING POINT (OPPOSING VIEW):

It means children spend less time going out to do some outdoor activities. This also reduces real time
contact with other people and inhibits the development of social skills.

TOPIC SENTENCE 2 (REBUTTAL ARGUMENT):

Nevertheless, video games actually can improve the intergroup relations by building a team in online
video games.

SUPPORTING POINT 2 (REBUTTAL ARGUMENT):

Most of the games require a team and the players need to cooperate to finish the task given in order to
secure the victory. Playing these video games also shows the children how importance of teamwork so
that they can grow up to be a better collaborator in future.

SUPPORTING DETAIL 2: EXAMPLES/ FACTS/ STATISTICS

Today, millions of youth play online video games coopera- tively with people from different social groups
(e.g., youth from different countries play cooperatively via the Internet), working together to achieve a
common goal. Online video games might afford a unique opportunity for intergroup coop- eration, which
may positively affect intergroup relations, con- sistent with Allport’s (29) contact hypothesis (6) (Child
Development Perspective, 2017).

outcomes. Retrieved from https://selfdeterminationtheory.org/wp-

PARAPHRASE OF THE EXCERPT:

In this era, millions of young people play online video games and do a collaboration with individuals from
diverse social backgrounds such as from different countries and together play the games cooperatively
through the internet to reach a shared goal. Online video games can offer intergroup collaboration a rare
opportunity, which can have a positive effect on intergroup ties (Child Development Perspective, 2017).
