4th grade Jerome is always leaving his desk to sharpen his pencil, talk to a peer, go to
the bathroom, or find something in his bag. As a result, his written work was seldom completed
when asked to be submitted. Sometimes he will not submit his work at all, and the teacher will
just find the crumpled paper beside his desk. His teacher would also see that he wrote with
extensive use of invented spelling. However, he contributed to class discussions and was well
liked by his classmates. His teacher also observed that he read at a slower rate than his peers.
He preferred to listen to his classmates read aloud rather than taking a turn himself.

1. How will you further assess Jerome?

Jerome’s case should be assessed in 2 different aspects: his behavior inside the
classroom and his reading ability which are both suspectedly connected to one another. In case
of Jerome’s behavior, series of observations will be needed for documentation of his behavior.
On the other hand, his reading level ability can be done using PHIL-IRI assessment or any
assessment tools including phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and
comprehension. Thorough investigations from parents, previous advisers, and close
friends/classmates of Jerome can importantly contribute to the said assessment. All these are
needed to evaluate the case of Jerome as basis for further action or recommendation.
2. What factors contribute to Jerome’s behavior inside the classroom?
Generally, Jerome’s case can be result of different factors affecting the child’s behavior
inside the classroom. Family, peers, school and the wider community all impact on student
behavior, and on learning and wellbeing. Behavior is also influenced by personal
characteristics such as age, sex, personality, genetics, and mental (brain function and structure)
and physical/physiological health. As also stated above, his behavior inside the classroom and
his reading ability are both suspectedly connected to one another. It is easily to jump into
conclusion that the child is suspected to have ADHD. However, this is only valid with formal
assessment, diagnosis and result to be conducted by an individual specialist. On the other side,
it should also be important to conclude and to consider that his behavior is result of his reading
difficulty.

3. Is there any signs of clinical disorder based on Jerome’s behavior and class
performance? Cite concrete evidence.
Jerome’s behavior such as unfinished tasks and appearing forgetful or losing
things (find something in his bag), and excessive physical movement (leaving his desk
to sharpen his pencil, talk to a peer, go to the bathroom are some of the symptoms of
children having an ADHD. His invented spelling and crumpled papers which probably
his frustration of his inability to correctly spell words can be also cite as symptom of
another disorder, dyslexia which is also connected to ADHD condition in some cases.
However, these symptoms need further observation and formal assessment to be
conducted by individual specialist.
4. What should the teacher do to address the special needs of Jerome? List at least 3.
1. Monitoring
The learner’s case should be well documented with observational tools, and
other evidences (interview from related persons, learner’s output, academic
track, records etc.) consistently.
2. Identifying the learner’s (Jerome) strengths and weaknesses
This is very important to address his needs for prevention and/or progression of
the learner’s behavior temporarily while validating his real condition.
3. Establish communication
Harmonious communication between the learner and the teacher and
communication to parents for extensive monitoring of the learner’s condition.

5. How will the teacher enhance Jerome’s strengths and weaknesses in order for him to be
at par with his classmates?
After identifying the learner’s strengths and weaknesses, it is important to take note of
these and plan and effective strategies that would contribute to the learner’s behavior condition
towards his academic tasks and reading capability. Jerome should be given tasks congruently
to his frequent action like excessive physical movement. The teacher may assign Jerome as
leader or responsible person involving physical movement in any give tasks like collecting
papers, cleaning the classroom and so on.
Lastly, his reading improvement can be addressed by giving necessary reading
remedials after appropriately assessing Jerome’s need in reading.
