How do you make your own sanitizer from scratch?

Abstract:

Our project is to make your own sanitizer from scratch, using materials we can find at home. Hand

sanitizers are very important and is an essential tool to have at all times, especially with the coronavirus

outbreak. Determining the effectiveness of our DIY hand sanitizer is the main goal of our study. In the

end of the study, we found out that we can make our own sanitizer and it is effective.

Objective/Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to make our own hand sanitizer from using natural materials that we have

at home.

Materials:

Spray bottle, isopropyl alcohol (more than (90%), aloe vera, coconut oil, measuring cup, beaker, blender,

and strainer

Background of the study:

The first sanitizer was created in 1988 by Purell to meet the needs of healthcare providers to help kill

germs. Hand sanitizer was made as an alternative for when hand soap and water was not available. With

the coronavirus epidemic, we wanted our project to help society using with the means of the environment.

Hand sanitizer is very beneficial because it comes in handy, reduce bacterial counts on hands, and

requires less time than handwashing. We used coconut oil as our essential oil because coconut oil is one

of the very convenient oils we can find and has so many uses. Aloe vera is very important in making our

hand sanitizer because it helps keep our hands smooth and counteracts the harshness of alcohol. We

wanted to focus on helping society by using materials that are accessible and easy to find at home.
Procedure:

1. Gather all the materials.

2. Pour 2/3 of isopropyl alcohol into the beaker.

3. Cut open 3 leaves of aloe vera and squeeze the gel out and blend it until fully shredded.

4. Pour the aloe vera into the beaker.

5. Pour in 8-10 drops of your choice of essential oil into the beaker and mix it well until fully

mixed.

6. Pour the newly made DIY sanitizer into your spray bottle.

Conclusion:

After the study, we found out that are materials were effective and we were able to make our own

sanitizer from scratch. With stores running low on hand sanitizer and alcohol, we wanted to come up with

an alternative solution that everyone can do at home and will greatly benefit everyone. Our hand sanitizer

is different from what you can find in the market because you can make it from scratch and can add any

essential oil you want and have your own preference of hand sanitizer.
