Title:
Synthesis/preparation of sodium Butyl Xanthate
Objective:
To prepare sodium butyl Xanthate for flotation of copper ore

Apparatus:
Digital Balance, Stirrer, Beaker and Hot plate

Theory:
General formula for sodium Butyl xanthate is;

Requirements for synthesis:

There are three requirements for synthesis of sodium Butyl Xanthate;

1) NaOH
2) Butyl (CH3(CH2)3OH)
3) CS2

The quantity of above requirements depends upon their atomic weight;

1) Atomic Weight of NaOH= 40

2) Atomic Weight of CS2=76
3) Atomic Weight of Butyl= 74

Total Weight=190
If we are going to prepare 20gm then;

1) NaOH= 40*20/190= 4.21gm

2) Butyl=74*20/190= 7.79ml
3) CS2=76*20/190= 8ml

Chemical Reaction:
NaOH+CH3(CH2)3OH+CSèCH3(CH2)3OCSSNa+H2O

Lab Report 01 Date:08/12/2020

 First we took 4.21gm of NaOH and mixed it with water and water was taken in very low
quantity.
 It was shacked with stirrer until it was dissolved in water.
 Then we took 7.7ml of Butyl and poured it drop by drop in mixture of NaOH and water
with continued stirring.
 Heat was produced during this operation and color of mixture was changed from light
red to dark red brownish.
 At that point we stopped pouring Butyl.
 Then we took 8ml of CS2 and poured it drop by drop with continued stirring.
 Solution became thicker and color was changed to dark brownish.
 That was the Sodium Butyl Xanthate.

Note: In Case if you don’t get thicker solution after mixing all the requirements;

a) Butyl is expired
b) NaOH is expired
c) Stirrer was not continuous

Precaution:
Chemical should not be expired.

1) Stirrer should be continuous.

2) Should adopt chemical handling rules.
3) Reaction should be in room temperature
