Mandatory Instructor Review in Week 4 Class [Feb. 12, 2021]

Topic: Impact of the Indian Residential Schools [IRS]

Students may submit individual assignments or a joint assignment with one other student. Both
students will receive the same mark for the joint assignment.

All students are required to create:

 a Power Point presentation, submitted as a PDF file; and


 a script to accompany the Power Point.

Students must submit the Power Point presentation and script through BB course messages.
Attach the Power Point saved as a PDF, and the script to one Blackboard course message. In the
subject line, identify the student name(s) and add “Assignment One”. Include the full name of
each team member as recorded in Blackboard. Copy the message to the second team member
through BB course messages.

Mandatory Review with students in Week 4 Class: [Feb. 12, 2021]

1. Students must identify their team member, if any.


2. Students must seek approval for the choice of Indian Residential School. Check the
Google Earth Website identified on page 3 for Indian Residential Schools across Canada.
3. Students must seek instructor approval for the person selected for the topic, i.e., Delia
Opekokew, Barrister & Solicitor; [retired] Senator Murray Sinclair; Professor John
Borrows; [former] AFN Chief Phil Fontaine; or [retired] Justice Harry Laforme.

Students will be marked on grammar, spelling, and overall presentation. Marks may be reduced
as low as zero for errors in grammar and spelling. Students should use short sentences. Avoid the
use of semi-colons and colons.

Script:

1. The Law 5% [minimum 2 pages double-spaced Times New Romans 12, maximum 3
pages] [sources must be identified in footnotes & included in the Bibliography]

a. Timeframe: from the Royal Proclamation of 1763 to the Settlement Agreement


2008.
b. Students must create a timeline identifying each stage.
c. All references must conform to McGill Guide citation format.
d. Students must describe each stage in complete sentences

2. The School 5% [minimum 2 pages double-spaced Times New Romans 12, maximum
3 pages] [sources must be identified in footnotes & included in the Bibliography]

a. history of a particular school and the community from which the children were
taken;
b. see the resource created by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation in
co-operation with Google Earth;
c. school selection must be approved by the instructor.

3. The Person 5% [minimum 2 pages double-spaced Times New Romans 12, maximum
3 pages] [sources must be identified in footnotes & included in the Bibliography]

a. Instructor must approve student selection of one individual from list below:
i. Delia Opekokew, Barrister & Solicitor; [retired] Senator Murray Sinclair;
Professor John Borrows; [former] AFN Chief Phil Fontaine; or [retired]
Justice Harry Laforme.
b. Students must outline the individual’s connection to the Indian Residential
Schools.

4. Footnotes and the Bibliography must be included in McGill Guide Format. The instructor
reserves the right to reduce the mark down to and including zero for failure to meet this
mandatory requirement.

Power Point:

1. 15 slide minimum, 20 slide maximum


2. Title slide must include full name of student(s) as entered in Blackboard, the name of the
Indian Residential School and must identify the person selected.
3. Sources must be cited on each slide. All sources must be included in final slide.
4. Recommended Approach: No more than 20 words per slide. Include images, with sources
included on the same slide as the image.
5. Do NOT use the instructor’s 2013 presentation on the Indian Residential Schools as a
source.
6. The Power Point must be organized in the same sections as the script:

a. Part 1 - The Law;


i. Timeframe: from the Royal Proclamation 1763 to the Settlement
Agreement 2008.
ii. Students must create a timeline identifying each stage.
iii. Include graphic of timeline, with events identified.
iv. Do NOT copy TRC Timeline posted in Week 1 materials.
v. All references must conform to McGill Guide citation format.

b. Part 2 - The School; and

c. Part 3 - The Person.
