ABSTRACT

The researcher made an intervention in order to help the students

who are slow readers with poor comprehension among the Grade 9 learners.

In this study, the researcher employed a one-group pre-test post test

experimental design to the ten (10) Grade 9 poor reader students. The study

used the purposive sampling in getting the respondents since the strategy is

intended only to poor reader students of the Grade 9 curriculum. In this

study, the researcher emphasized the importance of the literary drill pieces

as a strategy to the poor reader with slow comprehension. The learners were

exposed with three different reading materials prepared by the researcher

consisting of poems, short stories and essays to comprehend. Pre-test was

administered before the intervention and post-test after to evaluate the level

of performances of the respondents. After the administration of the post-

test, results showed that the intervention is effective with 18 percent

increase in the performance of the respondents. The intervention is highly

recommended for use to the students with poor comprehension.
