Introduction:
An anecdotal record is an observation that is written like a short story. They are
descriptions of incidents or events that are important to the person observing. Anecdotal records
are short, objective and as accurate as possible

Definition:
According to Randall anecdotal records can be define as a record of some significant item
of behavior/conduct, a record of an episode in the life of students, a word picture of the student
in action, a word snapshot at the moment of the incident, any narration of events in which may
be significant about his personality.
It is informal device used by the teacher to record behavior of students as observed by
him from time to time which may be useful later in contributing to a judgment about a student.

Characteristics of anecdotal records


Anecdotal records must possess certain characteristics as given below.
1. They should contain fact based explanation of what happened, when it happened, and
under what circumstances the behavior occurred.
2. Each anecdotal record should contain a record of a single incident.
3. The incident recorded should be significant to the student’s growth and development of
example.
• Simple reports of typical or unusual behavior
• Result of direct observation.
• Accurate and specific
• Explains child's behavior

PURPOSE
1. To record variety of evidence needed for good cumulative record (CV).
2. To generalizations about students specific behavior.
3. To stimulate teachers to look for information i.e in helping each student realize good self-
adjustment.
4. To understand individual’s basic personality pattern and his reactions in different
situations.
5. The teacher is able to understand her students to create healthy student- teacher
relationship.
6. It is record of different behavior of students that cannot be evaluated by other systematic
method.

GUIDELINES FOR MAKING ANECDOTAL RECORD


1. Keep a notebook handy to make brief notes to remind you of incidents you wish to
include in the record. Also include the name, time and setting in your notes.
2. Write the record as soon as possible after the event. The longer you leave it to write your
anecdotal record, you may forget the facts.
3. Describe the actions and what was said.
4. Include the responses of other people if they relate to the action.
5. Describe the event in the sequence that it occurred and should be complete.
6. The teacher should have practice and training in making observations and writing
records.

ITEMS IN ANECDOTAL RECORDS


Anecdotal records consist of two parts and following items are included in each part,
1. The first part of an anecdotal record should be fact based, simple and clear. It must
include name of the students, date, time and location of happening. Anecdotal records are
brief reports of what happened.
2. The second part of an anecdotal record may include additional comments, analysis,
conclusions and judgments.

Uses of anecdotal records


1. Record unusual events and students behaviors, such as accidents.
2. Record children's behavior, skills and interests for future planning.
3. Record how an individual is progressing in a specific area of development.
4. It provides a means of communication between the members of the health care team and
facilitates coordinated planning and continuity of care. It acts as a medium for data
exchange between the health care team.
