Chapter I

This chapter presents the introduction, statement of the problem,

hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and delimitation of the study

Introduction

Coping mechanisms are brought by a person’s conscious mind, but it

doesn’t mean all of the people has a positive outcome – others are

maladaptive or “non-coping” means a person responds to a stressor but

isn’t able to positively solve the stressful situation.

Coping mechanism are the strategies people often use in the face of

stress and/or trauma to help manage painful or difficult emotions. Coping

mechanism can help people adjust to stressful events while helping them

maintain their emotional well being. Coping mechanisms can be broadly

categorized as active or avoidant. Active coping mechanisms usually

involve an awareness of the stressor and conscious attempts to reduce

stress. Avoidant coping mechanisms, on the other hand, are characterized

by ignoring or otherwise avoiding the problem [CITATION Placeholder1 \l 1033 ].

While Emotional-focused coping is oriented toward managing the emotions

that accompany the perception of stress.

Later research (Tennen, Afflect, Armeli and Cerney, 2000) confirmed

the use of both types of coping strategies, suggesting that the same

individuals use both types of coping. The negative effects of emotion-

focused coping tended to related to psychological rather than physical

health. People who eats more, drink, sleep, or use of drugs, reported

poorer overall health are the people who avoid the coping. The choice of

coping have different effects in psychological and physical health. When a

person exhaust their personal strategies for coping, he or she may choose

to turn to therapies that teach them additional coping skills.

Intrapersonal skills are the foundations of a successful career. This is

emotional intelligence, the ability to recognize, understand and manage

their own emotions, and the emotion of other people both individual or by

group.

Emotional intelligence is a modern concept and developed by Daniel

Goleman in mid-1990s. It is the one part of the human psyche that we can

develop and improve by learning and participating new skills. People with

higher emotional intelligence find it easier to form and maintain

interpersonal relationships and to ‘fit in’ to group situations. They are also

better at understanding their own psychological state, which can include

managing stress effectively and being less likely to suffer from depression.

College can be quite stressful for students due to the many different

types of transitions they experience during this period. Immense levels of

stress may lead to mental health problems, especially if not treated early

(Douce & Keeling, 2014). Seventy-five (75%) of lifetime mental disorders

have been reported to first onset during college years, with students’ ages

ranging from 18-24 years (Kessler et al. 2005).

Research studies documented that the prevalence of stress has

recently been growing among students in higher education (Kadhiravan &

Kumar, 2012; Robotham & Julian, 2006). Given this, some researchers

have been concerned with the type of coping strategies that college

students use to cope with the stressful situation. Several studies have

reported that students often use poor coping strategies like drinking

alcohol, smoking, and using illegal drugs (Pierceall & Keim, 2007).

Students differ concerning their appraisal of the stressor, causal attribution,

preoccupation, feelings and actions to cope with stressors (SeiffgeKrenke,

Weidemann, Fentner, Aegenheister, & Poeblau, 2001). Use of coping skills

such as cognitive reinterpretation and problem-solving may promote better

health and adaptation in students of higher education (Sasaki & Yamasaki,

2007). There is an increasing evidence that leads us to believe that young

people who can at least make an effort to regulate negative emotions will

be less vulnerable to reacting to stress with inappropriate behaviors

(Pardini, Lochman, & Wells, 2004).

Due to the detrimental impact of stress on health, individuals engage

in different coping styles to deal with stressors. Thus, it has been felt that

conducting an empirical study to discover and understand the nature of the

coping strategies that college students use to deal with their stress is

necessary and momentous.

That is why the researchers decided to study this topic because in

this generation, most of the young adults are having a hard time to deal

with themselves. They lost their confidence or self-esteem; some are very

tired of themselves because of the different problems they encounter. Also,

it is one of the serious problem that most young adults are facing today and

most of the citizen in our society are not paying attention on it. This

research aims to enlighten everyone the how to determine the factors that

triggers their emotions. To discover the most effective coping up skills with

their intrapersonal development. It emphasizes the importance of how a

student feel after coping-up with their emotional issues.

In addition, the researchers aim to discover on how a person develop their

inner being and to know if the application of coping mechanism is effective

in each individual who is constantly growing.

Third Year BSED Major in English in their Intrapersonal Development.

The findings of this study will benefit the following:

Teachers. It will serve as their reference to know what the students

undergo through based on their behavior in class.

School. The researcher will benefit the school to give deeper

understanding towards coping mechanism of every individual.

Parents. Parents can have the idea of the issue that their child was
