COMMUNITY PUBLIC HEALTH

ASSIGMENT#3

INSTRUCTION: Given the three levels of community prevention site a scenario

wherein you can effectively apply those levels.

● SCENARIO:

On 31st of December 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) was alerted to a cluster of pneumonia
patients in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. One week later, on 7 th day of January 2020, Chinese
authorities confirmed that they had identified a novel (new) coronavirus (COVID-19) as the cause of the
pneumonia. Epidemiological evidence shows that COVID-19 infection is spread from one person to others
via droplets produced from the respiratory system of infected people, often during coughing or sneezing.
According to current data, time from exposure to onset of symptoms is usually between two and 14 days,
with an average of five days. Common signs of COVID-19 infection are similar to the common cold and
include respiratory symptoms such as dry cough, fever, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties. In
more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and
death. Unfortunately, on 20 January 2020, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in the Philippines in a
38-year-old female, Chinese national. Her companion, 44 years old, male, Chinese national later also tested
positive for COVID-19 and died on 1 February 2020, which was reported as the first death outside China.
After hearing the News, the people were alarmed and the WHO declared a public Health Emergency.

● PRIMARY PREVENTION
The primary prevention strategies are based on reducing the risk of person‐to‐person spreading.
Measures include physical or social distancing, quarantining, ventilation of indoor spaces, covering
coughs and sneezes, hand washing, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. Furthermore, the
use of face masks or coverings is essential in public settings. Lastly, the WHO and other similar health
organizations have published visual tools such as videos and posters to demonstrate the correct application of
hand hygiene throughout the entire society. These posters, distributed throughout different parts of society in
order to draw maximum attention to the importance of hand hygiene, created awareness among all of them.

● SECONDARY PREVENTION
To reduce the risk of transmission in the community, individuals were advised to wash hands diligently, practice
respiratory hygiene (i.e., cover their cough), and avoid crowds and close contact with ill individuals, if
possible. Early screening, diagnosis, isolation, and treatment were also conducted to prevent further
spread. Preventive strategies are focused on the isolation of patients and careful infection control,

including appropriate measures to be adopted during the diagnosis and the provision of clinical care to an infected
patient.

● TERTIARY PREVENTION
Active monitoring of people who are isolated or affected by the virus are conducted. Furthermore, to improve the
quality of life and reduce the symptoms of the disease, people who are positive of Covid-19 virus, are advised to
