Activity Title: Application of Newton’s Laws of Motion
Learning Targets: To solve some problem involving Newtons’ laws of motion along x-axis and y-axis
References: Intoroductory Physics Modular Workbook pages. 33-34

Several forces acting on a certain body for which in most cases is not directed along a single
axis but instead poins in different direction in a plane. We will be using Newton’s Second Law in
component form:
 Fx , net F 1, x  F 2, x  F 3, x  ...  max
F F 1, y  F 2 , y  F 3, y  ...
y , net   may

That is, all components of forces acting on the body along the x-axis are added so as with the
components of forces along the y-axis. It may be helpful to write down some procedures for
solving problems involving Newton’s laws of motion. A very systematic approach has been used
to solve the problems. Briefly, you should;
1. Draw a sketch of the problem situation. Isolate the various bodies in the problem and make a
FBD for each body showing all the forces acting on the body.
2. Choose a suitable coordinate system (I.e., y axis is vertical and x axis is horizontal except in
situations like the inclined plane where a different choice is simpler) and resolve the various force
vectors into their x and y components.
3. Apply Newton’s law of motion separately for every component. If the motion is constant or the
body is not moving at all at that particular direction, use 1 st law. Otherwise, if the body is
accelerating on that particular direction, apply 2nd law.
4. Solve the set of equations obtained in step (3) for the unkown quantities.

Remember!
 If Velocity is constant, then Fnet= ΦN  When the applied force has a larger
magnitude than the force of friction, the
F y0 F 0
y
“extra force” is the Fnet which accelerates the
FN  Fg  0 FA  Ff  0 body.
FN  Fg FA  Ff Fnet= ma
FA - Ff = ma
In the figure above,
 It shows that the under static equilibrium, the normal force ( FN) is equal to the force of
gravity (Fg) and the appied force (FA) is equal to the Friction force (Ff).
 It shows also that for uniformly accelerated motion, the net force Fnet is the difference
between the applied force (FA) and the Friction force (Ff).

Activity Title: Friction Forces

Learning Targets: To solve some problem involving Fricton Forces
References: Intoroductory Physics Modular Workbook pages. 35-36
When two bodies are in contact with each other, they exert a force ( friction force ) on each other,
which opposes any tendency for a surface to move relative to another surface. The force between two
contacting stationary surfaces that prevents motion between them is called static friction. Static
Friction surface breaks away and begins to move relative to the other. Once motion is started, the
friction forces acting between the surfaces usually decreases so that smaller force is necessary to
maintain uniform motion. The forces acting between the surfaces in relative motion are called forces of
kinetic friction.
The friction force exerted by one surface on another depends on two factors:
1. The kinds of surfaces that are in contact
2. the perpedicular force with which either surface is pressed against the other. This perpedicular
force is usually referred to as the normal force FN .
The more tightly two objects are pressed together, the greater the friction between them. The
following formulas relate the normal force FN pressing one surface against another to the resulting
friction force:

Fs  sFN (for static friction)

Fk  kFN (for kinetic friction)
Example. A 25 kg block rests on a rough horizontal floor. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between the block and floor is 0.15. An applied force of 160 N acts on the block for 3 seconds.
Compute the speed of the block at the end of 3 seconds.

Activity Title: Mass and Weight

Learning Targets: To differentiate mass and weight
References: Arciaga, M. E. and Rara, B.H. Exploring Science & Technology IV. pages. 64-65

Weight is a force -- it has both magnitude and direction. The magnitude of an object’s
weight is equal to its mass and the gravitational acceleration, which is 9.8 m/s 2 . The direction
of an object’s weight is downward because of the Earth’s gravity, which is also directed
downward. Kilogram (kg) is the unit measure for mass and Newton (N) is the unit of measure
for weight. In symbols, we have w=mg .
Where w - is the weight, m - is the mass & g - is the gravitational acceleration.

For instance, what is the weight of a 2 kg object? To solve for the object’s weight, we have
w=mg
w=(2kg)(9.8m/s2)
w=19.6kg.m/s2
w=19.6 N, downward

On Earth, gravitational attraction weakens as altitude increases. So, a person weighs less when
he or she is on top of the mountain than when he or she is at sea level. However, the difference
can only be measured by sensitive scientific instruments.

Mass , on the other hand, is a scalar quantity. It is the amount of matter an object
contains. Inertia is related to mass. Inertia is the property of an object to resist change in its
state of motion. The greater the mass, the greater the force needed to cause acceleration,
change the object’s state of motion or cause it to move from a state of rest.
Mass does not depend on gravitational attraction. Unlike weight, a 30 kg object on Earth
also have a mass of 30 kg on the moon.

Do the Exercise! (Write your answer in a long bondpaper)

What is the mass of a man that weighs 81 N on the moon which the acceleration due to gravity on
moon is 1.2 m/s2?
