General Guidelines and instructions for:

'Standard Details Manual for Water Supply

and Sanitation Facilities in Somalia'
1 The 'Standard Details Manual Model' can be used to compute the cost of different water supply and sanitation
technologies in various parts of Somalia.

2 The 'Standard Details Manual Model' is based on standard Bill of Quantities. The bills of quantities are based
on the dimensions of the various water supply and sanitation facilities as presented in 'Volume III of III - Book of
drawings for the standard details manual for water supply and sanitation facilities in Somalia'

3 The spreadsheets have been customized whereby the user is required to work out the unit rate of the
constituent components of a facility and insert these in the corresponding Unit Rates column cell of the affected
component. All other cells are password protected. When the unit rates are entered in the corresponding line
items, the total line cost and consequently the total cost of the facility is worked out automatically.

4 Users are only required to enter the unit rates in the cells thus marked as below in the standard bills of
quantities for the various facilities.

5 Incase the dimensions or the assumptions from which the facilities are designed upon vary, the user is required
to contact the UNICEF office to be availed with "UN-PROTECTED" spreadsheets which he can use. This will
allow the user to amend the quantities as appropriate. It should however be noted that any significant alteration
of the dimensions, sizes or layouts of these standard designs may alter to a great extent the assumptions made
during design. This may affect the functionality of the designs and it is advised that if such is the case, specialist
advice should be sought.

6 The line amount is obtained by multiplying the quantity with the corresponding rates.

7 The page sub-total is obtained by summing up the amounts for each of the corresponding pages. The subtotals
for each page are carried to the collection page summary.

8 The total cost of the facility is obtained by summing the collection summary at the end of each bill. This is the
cost for constructing the facility.

9 For a complete project such as the water yard, the separate bills of quantities for the corresponding project
component can be combined together to come up with the project cost. Example: The following components
can be combined to form a complete project for a water yard;

a) Generator house
b) Caretakers room
c) Animal troughs
d) Toilet
e) Water Kiosk
f) Fencing
