Intro

For my video essay on sound I am going to look at the rela onship between sound and
pictures in moving image produc ons. I’m going to focus on the comparing Sounds in several
dance scenes from di erent genres of movies and Non diege c/ diege c.

This scene from hairspray starts o as non-diege c from the background music playing as
the characters rush home for their favourite programme and then becomes diege c when
they turn on the TV as it is the music that the dancers are dancing and the man is singing to
in the programme. Although the scene is has nondiege c there are diege c sounds like the
characters talking to each other. This scene also includes several other sound e ects
like a hairspray can, the bus Engine, the school bell, footsteps, background noise of people
speaking and the dancers clapping. Compared to the scene from step up where the scene is
completely diege c as the characters are dancing to the music they hear being played by the
fact that the band and the singer. There is s ll diege c sound e ects added in on post
produc on like the cheers from the surrounding people and the claps that the dancers
make. There it’s also a maraca instrument sound added in on post produc on as in the scene
you can clearly see that this instrument is not used in the band.

I will now compare sound in di erent movie genre dancing scenes. In the movie Centre
Stage the audio is added in on post produc on as the sound is completely muted from the
lming stage and music was among with the sound e ects from the audience and
motorbike. I can tell this as you cannot hear the noise of the dances feet hi ng the ground
when dancing. I also have my own experience of doing this in my music video. The
background music during this scene also changes depending on the emo ons that are
portrayed in the dance. The next clip is a live performance of river dancing from the April
30th, 1994 Eurovision in Dublin. They cannot make any post produc on edits as its live
therefore all sound are live as it was lmed from the Instruments and singing to the
presenters and the audience. This clip it’s di erent to the last one as they accentuate the
noise of the dancers feet hi ng the ground with Cardioid mics.

Next we have the Anima on Leap and its sound would be done in post produc on so the
sound editor can be crea ve and controls what happens with sound in the scene. All of the
sound e ects and speaking role are added in to make it as realist as possible because the
cartoons starts from nothing. The speaking roles would consist of an actor/actress recording
their lines in a recording studio use a cardioid condenser microphone. There are two non
diege c music track in the scene the rst been a couple of seconds of piano music and the
second being Con dent by Demi Lovato which is played for the most of the scene. There are
also several diege c sound e ects including broom sweeping, a music box, cheering and
tapping from their feet.

The last clip is a handheld device recording of a public event.

This clip is par cularly di erent as the lm and sound quality would not be as good compare
to the rest of the clip I have shown you but this would also be more accepted. This clip
would probably be lmed using a DSLR and a shotgun mic compare to the other clips which

would be using higher technical equipment. There is no control over what sounds happen
during the videoing for example the background screams. All sound used in this clip are
diege c.
