LAB 3: INTRODUCTION TO CASSY AND HARDWARE EQUIPMENT APPLIED TO

HALF-WAVE RECTIFIER

LARNING OBJECTIVES
After mastering this unit you will:
 Recognize how to use CASSY sensors and software to record waveforms.
 Know the operation of a single-phase diode rectifier with resistive and inductive loads and
their performance parameters.
 Know the effects of a free-wheeling diode on the performance of the rectifier.

INTRODUCTION TO CASSY MEAUERMENT SENSORS

1. SETUP THE CASSY MODULES

Two units of CASSY sensors are available for each platform. Each sensor unit can measure two
voltage signals, or one voltage and one current signals. The steps to install CASSY sensor with
any power electronic setup is discussed as follows.
Considering the single-phase half-wave rectifier circuit shown in Fig. 1-1, the signal that are
required to be recorded are the source voltage Us, the source current Is, Load current Io, and load
voltage Uo. It is worth mentioning that only four signals can be measured at a time. Therefore,
more than four signals recording can be implemented in successive experiments.
The steps to define the CASSY sensors are as follows. Firstly, when you open the CASSY
software, the window of Fig. 2-1 will appear where we can select the measurement channels.
Channels numbering example, for instance IA1
 I = Current measurement (I / U)
 A= 1. Channel (1 / 2)
 1 = first Sensor CASSY (1…8). However, we have only two sensors on each panel.

Fig. 2-1 Channels of CASSY sensors

As we can see, Sensor 1, channel 1 can be either current or voltage. However, channel B is only
voltage sensing unit.
For the current experiment, the CASSY sensors are going to be defined as follows:

 IA1 Current First Channel – CASSY Sensor 1

 UB1 Voltage Second Channel – CASSY Sensor 1
 IA2 Current First Channel – CASSY Sensor 2
 UB2 Voltage Second Channel – CASSY Sensor 2
The CASSY software can measure AC component, DC component and RMS values. Therefore,
the setting of the measured values has to be defined as given in Fig. 2-3.
In this area you can select the channel.
1. Select the range from 0.1 V…250 V
2. Select the measurement method
 Instantaneous value
 Average value (AV)
 Root mean square (RMS)(AC+DC)
 Root mean square (RMS) (AC component)
3. Time measurement Diagram function

Standard setting for channel is:

 Measurement time:100 ms
 Interval:100 μs
 Trigger:UB1, 0,0 V Rising
 Repeating measurement of (single shot)

Procedure for Test 1 (R load):

1- Connect the circuit as shown in Fig. 2-3.
2- Setup the CASSY sensors for the following signals:
a. supply current iS
b. supply voltage vS
c. Load current idChannel IA1
d. Load voltage vV1 Channel UB1

Setting of CASSY for the current experiment:

Basic settings
Supply voltage VS = 45 V
Load resistance R = 33 Ω (three resistors100 Ω in parallel)

diode voltage and diode current.
By pressing diagram tab, you can adjust the diagram settings as line width, font size, and exporting
the graph figure.

DO NOT USE PRINT SCREEN IN YOUR REPORT.

5- Fill Table 2-1 and compare to the corresponding simulations in Table 1-1.

If the diode voltage and current are required to be recorded, by replacing sensor 2 channels as
follows:
 Diode current iv Channel IA2
 Diode voltage vV1 Channel UB2

The valve (diode) current and voltage waveforms are shown in Fig. 2-6
IA1/A

Fig. 2-6: UV and IV at the Valve V1

From the conducted test, the results show:

 The diode is turned on when the anode voltage is positive and connects the positive half-waves
of the supply voltage to the load resistance as a pulsating, intermittent, single-pulse dc voltage.
 The valve current also follows a sinusoidal form and is in phase with the dc voltage. The
conduction angle of current flow equals 180°. The dc current is identical with the valve current
in a single-phase rectifier.
 The negative half-wave is blocked by the diode and present at the valve as a reverse voltage.

Procedure for Test 2 (R-L load):

1- Repeat test-1 considering the inductive load shown in Fig. 1-6 with the inductance
values mentioned in Table 2-2
2- Fill Table 2-2 and compare to the corresponding results of Table 1-2.

a. Source current,
b. Load current,
c. Freewheeling diode current
d. D1 Anode-Cathode voltage
