Activity Title: Multiplying Mentally 2-digit by 1- to 2-digit Numbers with Products up to 200
MELC : multiplies mentally 2-digit by 1- to 2-digit numbers with products up to 200 and explains
the strategies used M4NS-Id-42.3
In this activity you will…
a. multiply 2-digit by 1-digit number mentally.
b. apply distributive property to solve multiplication problems mentally.
c. show appreciation of mental multiplication as important skills needed to
daily situations.
Introduction:
Mental math is the practice of doing calculations in one’s head without the need of paper, pen or
calculator. One can think of it as manipulating numbers in the mind. We do mental math every day. Like
multiplying 2-digit by 1- to 2- digit numbers, we can easily compute the answer mentally by multiplying first the
ones then the one and tens or by using the distributive property of multiplication.
Discussion and Examples:
Example 1: Mang Lito and his caretaker can harvest 65 kilograms of kalamansi in a day. How many
kilograms of kalamansi can they harvest in 3 days?
Questions:
How many kilograms of kalamansi can Mang Lito and his caretaker harvest in a day?
What is asked in the problem?
What is the number sentence? 3 x 65 = n
How can we solve the problem mentally?
Solution 1: 65 Multiply mentally the ones.
x3 3 x 5 = 15
Multiply mentally the ones by tens.
3 x 60 = 180
Add mentally:
15 + 180 = 195
Solution 2: By distributive property
3 x 65 = (3 x 60) + (3 x 5)
= 180 + 15
= 195
Example 2: Multiply 3 x 48 mentally.
Solution 1:
Mentally multiply the ones. 3x8 = 24
Mentally multiply the tens by ones 3 x 40 = 120
Mentally add the partial products 24 + 120 = 144
Solution 2:
By using the distributive property mentally
3 x 48 = (3 x 40) + (3 x 8)
= 120 + 24
= 144
How do you multiply mentally 2-digit by 1-digit numbers with products up to 200?
To multiply mentally 2-digit by 1-digit numbers with products up to 200, follow the following steps:
Solution 1
 Multiply the ones
 Multiply the tens and the ones
1
 Add the two partial products
Factor 14 22 41 21 32 40
Factor 2 3 2 4 2 2
Product
Solution 2
 Use the distributive property

Level 1
A. Use the distributive property to give the product mentally. Write the missing number.
Example: 3 x 59 = (3 x 50) + (3 x 9)
= 150 + 27
= 177

1) 7 x 23 = (7 x 20) + (_________) 4) 4 x 57 = (________) + (4 x 7)

= ________ + 21 = 200 + _______
= ________ = _________

2) 6 x 15 = (________) + (6 x 5) 5) 2 x 75 = (2 x 70) + (_________)

= 60 + _______ = _________ + 10
= _________ = _________

3) 3 x 32 = (3 x 30) + (_________)
= _______ + 6
= _________

B. Write the missing number to complete each product.

1) 45 2) 58 3) 35 4) 19
x4 x3 x2 x5
__0 __4 _0 _5
5) 36 6) 76 7) 58 8) 19
x5 x2 x3 x7
__0 __2 __4 __3

Level 2
A. Use the distributive property to give the product mentally.
Example: 3 x 59 = (3 x 50) + (3 x 9)
= 150 + 27
= 177
1) 4 x 43 = (________) + (_________) 4) 7 x 26 = (________) + (_________)
= ________ + ________ = _________ + __________
= ________ = _________

2) 7 x 25 = (________) + (_________) 5) 5 x 34 = (________) + (_________)

= _________ + __________ = _________ + __________
= _________ = _________

3) 6 x 33 = (________) + (_________)
= _________ + __________
B. Copy and complete the table.
