DEFINITION OF TOEFL

What is the TOEFL? TOEFL stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language. It is a
proficiency test used to measure a person's English language skills without being
directly related to the teaching and learning process. Thus the TOEFL is different
from the achievement test, which is a test whose scope of the test is limited to the
material that students have studied in one English class.
There are three kinds of TOEFL tests, namely the International TOEFL test,
Institutional TOEFL test, and TOEFL Like-Test. The difference is that there are new
International TOEFL questions in each test execution. Meanwhile, the questions for
the institutional test and the TOEFL Like-test are based on questions a few years
earlier from the International TOEFL test. The validity period of the TOEFL test
varies. For the International TOEFL test, the validity period is two years which can be
accepted at all universities in the world. It can also be used to apply for scholarships
abroad. For the Institutional TOEFL Test, the validity period is only six months, the
cost is much lower, it cannot be used to apply to universities abroad but sometimes it
can be used to apply for scholarships abroad. TOEFL Like-Test cannot be used to
apply to foreign universities, only to meet the requirements of certain universities in
Indonesia.
TOEFL SCORING

The TOEFL English test consists of two types, namely Computer-based Testing and
Paper-Based Testing. Model Computer-based Testing is a test that uses computer
media. The assessment score for this model is in the range 216-677. Meanwhile,
Paper Based Testing is a test that uses paper as the testing medium. The assessment
score with this model is in the range of 450-550 and above. TOEFL test scores range
from: 310 (minimum score) to 677 (maximum score) for the PBT (paper-based test)
version.

Since 1998, the TOEFL test has been held online using a computer (Computer-based
Testing / CBT), and since 2005 it has been called the iBT (Internet-based Test). In
places that cannot implement CBT or iBT (because there are no computer facilities
and internet networks), the TOEFL exam is still held manually using paper and
potlots (paper-based test or PBT). More complete information about the CBT and
paper-based TOEFL tests related to registration, location, fees, and test preparation
materials can be seen on the official TOEFL website, http://www.toefl.org (the CBT
version of the TOEFL exam results has a value ranges from 0 to 300, while values for
iBT are from 0 to 120).

Recently, the TOEFL test organizers have also held a type of TWE (Test of Written
English) test whose scores are separate from the TOEFL test scores. This test takes 30
minutes, and participants will be asked to write a short essay describing the
participant's ability to express and express an idea or idea, and support that idea with
examples found in everyday life using English that is standard. If TWE (Test of
Written English) is included in the part tested, this test is usually carried out before
the Listening Comprehension exam.

(B) who believed

(C) believed

(D) who did she believe

CONJ / RELATIVE PRONOUN + SUBJECT + VERB.

Jika kita melihat keempat pilihan, coba untuk mengeliminasi 2 pilihan untuk
memudahkan Anda memilih jawaban yang benar. Mari kita lihat pilihan A dan D.

A. Who she believed

D. Who did she believe

“She” merupakan bentuk
subject pronoun.
cari.

Pilihan jawaban tersisa pilihan (B) Who believed dan (C) believed. Lalu jawaban
“Who.” Maka, jawaban yang tepat adalah pilihan (B) Who believed.

READING COMPREHENSION
The railroad was not the first institution to impose regularity on society or to draw
attention to the importance of precise timekeeping.

For as long as merchants have set out their wares at daybreak and communal
festivities have been celebrated, people have been in rough agreement with their
neighbors as to the time of day.

The value of this tradition is today more apparent than ever. Were it not for public
acceptance of a single yardstick of time, social life would be unbearably chaotic: the
massive daily transfers of goods, services, and information would proceed in fits and
starts; the very fabric of modern society would begin to unravel.

1. What is the main idea of the passage?

a. In modern society we must take more time for our neighbors.

b. The traditions of society are timeless.
c. An accepted way of measuring time is essential for the smooth functioning of
society.
d. Society judges people by the times at which they conduct certain activities.

2. The phrase “this tradition” in the third sentence refers to?

a. The practice of starting the business day at dawn.

b. Friendly relations between neighbors.
c. The railroad’s reliance on time schedules.
d. People’s agreement on the measurement of time.

have been in rough agreement with their neighbors as to the time of day” sehingga
waktu (D).
