This document provides an introduction to the Manufacturing Processing Lab course at Z.H. College of Engineering & Technology. The objectives of the course are to familiarize students with basic manufacturing processes and materials, impart knowhow of various machines and tools used, and provide hands-on training. After completing the course, students should be able to select manufacturing processes based on drawings, describe tools used in hot and cold working, classify different processes, and relate practical job manufacturing. The document outlines various manufacturing processes like turning, milling, shaping, and joining methods. It also describes common engineering materials like metals, plastics, and composites. Virtual tours of lab shops and safety equipment are mentioned.

Z.H.College of Engineering & Technology Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh Objectives & Outcomes After successful completion of this course, students must be able to ➢To familiarize with the basic ➢Select the manufacturing process, manufacturing processes and based upon given job’s drawing. Materials. ➢Describe and distinguish various ➢To impart basic knowhow of tools used in hot and cold working various machines and tools processes. used. ➢Classify different manufacturing ➢Hands-on training on various processes. manufacturing processes. ➢Relate the job manufactured from practical point of view. The Need Manufacturing • Manufacturing is the making of goods by hand or by machine that upon completion the business sells to a customer. • Items used in manufacture may be raw materials or component parts of a larger product. • The manufacturing usually happens on a large-scale production line of machinery and skilled labor.
Men, Material, Machines(Processes),
Money, Energy etc. Materials Engineering Materials Materials are classified as: 1. Metals 2. Non-metallic materials Metals may be Ferrous or non ferrous however nonmetallic materials may be synthetic or natural.
Metals are the materials which show
the properties like hardness, opaque, shiny and has good electrical and thermal conductivity. Ferrous Materials • Metals or alloys having high percentage of iron. • These materials are used where high strength is required at relatively low cost. • These materials are basically obtained from pig iron ore which after treatment gives three types of ferrous materials. 1. Steel 2. Cast iron 3. Wrought iron Non-ferrous materials • Metals other than iron • They are basically used in alloy form. In pure form, they are used with other materials in order to obtain a certain property like corrosion resistance, ductility, hardness etc. • They are used with other metals in order to improve their strength. • Non-ferrous materials may be metals other than iron or alloys. Non-metallic materials (synthetic and Natural)
These are non-metallic materials that do not
exist in nature (synthetic), although they are manufactured from nature substances like oils, coal etc. They may be in one of the following type: 1. Plastics 2. Ceramics 3. Composites Natural non-metallic materials These occur naturally. Some of the natural materials are: 1. Wood 2. Rubber 3. Glass 4. Emery (naturally occurring aluminum oxide ) 5. Ceramic 6. Diamonds 7. Oils 8. Silicon Manufacturing Processes • Removal of extra material unwanted material: Turning, Milling, Shaper, Slotter, Grinding, Fitting, carpentry etc. • Reshaping under the impact of forces: Forging, smithy (tin smithy) etc. • Melting and poring in a cavity of desired shape: Moulding • Joining: Welding, soldering, brazing, riveting etc. • Others: Electroplating, polishing, painting, assembling etc. Material Addition: Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing): Newer One Virtual Tour • E-resources in the form of videos pertaining to job fabrication for each of the shop will be uploaded. Live interaction will be held as per the time slot given in the respective time table. • The report submission (electronic form) shall be held as per the schedule mentioned in the above table • The detailed report is to be prepared as per the format given (hand written and subsequent e submission). • The students are advised to prepare their report themselves. They must not share/copy their report with/from other students. • There will be 2 MCQ based online tests (one after 5th Turn and another after 11th Turn), the dates of which will be notified separately. Objectives for different Shops SHOPS OBJECT Carpentry To prepare through tenon and mortise joint. Tin Smithy To prepare a funnel of GI sheet. Fitting To perform filing, drilling and tapping operations. Molding To prepare a green sand mould and perform casting. Smithy To prepare a square headed bolt Milling To perform gear cutting by simple indexing Welding To prepare a single V-butt joint by arc welding Turning To perform facing, turning and knurling operations on lathe machine Machine To perform planing and slot cutting on shaper and slotter machines Electroplating To perform electroplating on a given job Report Format: Hand written with e-submission Safety
