Discussion

Before installing your router, make sure you have a stable internet
connectivity. If you don't have a good internet connection, the router setup
experience will be frustrating. The simplest method is to connect a computer to the
modem or gateway device supplied by your Internet service provider (ISP). If your
computer detects an Internet connection, you're ready to set up the router.

To setup automatic wireless network configuration

1. Open Network Connections
2. Right-click Wireless Network Connection, and then click Properties.
3. On the Wireless Networks tab, do one of the following:
• To enable automatic wireless network configuration, select the Use
Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box. This
check box is selected by default. For information about what happens
when you enable automatic wireless network configuration, see Notes.
• To disable automatic wireless network configuration, clear the Use
Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box.
4. To connect to an existing wireless network, do one of the following:
Access point (infrastructure)
• To connect to an existing access point (infrastructure) network,
under Available networks, click the network name, and then
click Configure.
In Wireless Network Properties, specify the wireless network key
(Wired Equivalent Privacy) settings, or, if the network key is
automatically provided for you (for example, the key is stored on the
wireless network adapter given to you by your administrator), select
the The key is provided for me automatically check box. If you are
unsure about whether a network key is needed or which settings you
need to enter, contact your network administrator or the wireless
network adapter manufacturer.
 Important
• If a network does not broadcast its network name, it will not appear
under Available networks. To connect to an access point
(infrastructure) network that you know is available but that does not
appear under Available networks, under Preferred networks,
click Add. In Wireless Network Properties, specify the network name

computer network to a position in the list that is higher than the position of an
access point network.

• To provide enhanced security for 802.11 wireless networks and for wired
Ethernet networks, IEEE 802.1x authentication is enabled by default. For more
information about how to set up 802.1x authentication

Find your private IP address

When you are connected to the internet, your device is assigned a private IP
address by the router in your local network. In other words, different devices
connected to the same local network have different private IP addresses. A device’s
private IP address is not the same as its public IP address, which is used to
address it by devices outside your local network.

Knowing your private IP address is helpful for configuring network-related settings.

Find your router’s default gateway address

When you are connected to the internet, your router (often called the default
gateway) has an IP address. Your default gateway transfers traffic from your local
network to other networks or the internet and back to you.

Knowing how to access your default gateway is helpful for troubleshooting network
issues and accessing your router’s settings.

What Is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is the delivery of different services through the Internet.

These resources include tools and applications like data storage, servers,
databases, networking, and software.

Rather than keeping files on a proprietary hard drive or local storage

device, cloud-based storage makes it possible to save them to a remote database.
As long as an electronic device has access to the web, it has access to the data and
the software programs to run it.

Cloud computing is a popular option for people and businesses for a

number of reasons including cost savings, increased productivity, speed and
efficiency, performance, and security.

Understanding Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is named as such because the information being accessed
is found remotely in the cloud or a virtual space. Companies that provide cloud
services enable users to store files and applications on remote servers and then
access all the data via the Internet. This means the user is not required to be in a
specific place to gain access to it, allowing the user to work remotely.

10 | P a g e
Cloud computing takes all the heavy lifting involved in crunching and
processing data away from the device you carry around or sit and work at. It also
moves all of that work to huge computer clusters far away in cyberspace. The
Internet becomes the cloud, and voilà—your data, work, and applications are
available from any device with which you can connect to the Internet, anywhere in
the world.

Cloud computing can be both public and private. Public cloud services
provide their services over the Internet for a fee. Private cloud services, on the other
hand, only provide services to a certain number of people. These services are a
system of networks that supply hosted services. There is also a hybrid option,
which combines elements of both the public and private services.

Types of Cloud Services

Regardless of the kind of service, cloud computing services provide users
with a series of functions including:

 Email
 Storage, backup, and data retrieval
 Creating and testing apps
 Analyzing data
 Audio and video streaming
 Delivering software on demand

Cloud computing is still a fairly new service but is being used by a number
of different organizations from big corporations to small businesses, nonprofits to
government agencies, and even individual consumers.

Deployment Models
There are various types of clouds, each of which is different from the other.
Public clouds provide their services on servers and storage on the Internet. These
are operated by third-party companies, who handle and control all the hardware,
software, and the general infrastructure. Clients access services through accounts
that can be accessed by just about anyone.

Private clouds are reserved for specific clientele, usually one business or
organization. The firm's data service center may host the cloud computing service.
Many private cloud computing services are provided on a private network.

Hybrid clouds are, as the name implies, a combination of both public and
private services. This type of model allows the user more flexibility and helps
optimize the user's infrastructure and security.

Types of Cloud Computing

Cloud computing is not a single piece of technology like a microchip or a
cellphone. Rather, it's a system primarily comprised of three services: software-as-

11 | P a g e
a-service (SaaS), infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), and platform-as-a-service
(PaaS).

1. Software-as-a-service (SaaS) involves the licensure of a software application

to customers. Licenses are typically provided through a pay-as-you-go model
or on-demand. This type of system can be found in Microsoft Office's 365. 1
2. Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) involves a method for delivering
everything from operating systems to servers and storage through IP-based
connectivity as part of an on-demand service. Clients can avoid the need to
purchase software or servers, and instead procure these resources in
an outsourced, on-demand service. Popular examples of the IaaS system
include IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure.2  3
3. Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) is considered the most complex of the three
layers of cloud-based computing. PaaS shares some similarities with SaaS,
the primary difference being that instead of delivering software online, it is
actually a platform for creating software that is delivered via the Internet.
This model includes platforms like Salesforce.com and Heroku.

Testing network connectivity with ping

Ping is a network administration utility or tool used to test connectivity on

an Internet Protocol (IP) network. It also measures the latency or delay between two
computers.

To test network connectivity with ping:

Open the Command Prompt or Terminal. Every operating system has a
command line interface that will allow you to run the Ping command. The Ping
command operates virtually identically on all systems.
 If using Windows, open the Command Prompt. Click the Start button and
enter "cmd" into the Search field. Windows 8 users can type "cmd" while on
the Start screen. Press Enter to launch the Command Prompt.
 If using Mac OS X, open the Terminal. Open your Applications folder, and
then open the Utilities folder. Select Terminal.
 If using Linux, Open a Telnet/Terminal window. It is most often found in
the Accessories folder in your Applications directory.

Type ping followed by an IP address or a website address then press Enter

key to execute the command. Here is a brief explanation of commonly used ping
commands:
 ping 127.0.0.1 (This is a "loopback ping" - your computer trying to talk to
itself. If the loopback step fails, it might be because the TCP drivers are
corrupted, the network adapter might not be working, or another service is
interfering with IP.)
 ping (This will ping the IP address of a device like a local computer, remote
server or any client that receives an IP address to verify that it is reachable
and that you can communicate with it properly.) Example: ping 192.168.1.1

12 | P a g e
(this is the default IP address of NETGEAR routers)
 ping (This command will test for the Internet connectivity and DNS
functionality.) Example: ping www.netgear.com, ping google.com
Here is a screenshot of a successful ping test:

The first arrow shows the computer we are trying to reach is responding.
The DNS address "www.netgear.com" is displayed into the equivalent 54.187.xx.yy
IP address. This also shows that the computer is online, and it has Internet access.
The second arrow shows that all of the sent packets are received showing
that there is 0% loss. This means that the connection is available and stable.
The third arrow shows the average time it took to answer. "Average =
173ms".  In this example, the website server is several time zones away. A ping
reply for a PC/ Server on the same local network should be 1-10 milliseconds.

Unsuccessful ping replies:

Request timed out

This message indicates that no Reply messages were received within the
default time of 1 second. This can be due to many different causes; the most
common include network congestion, failure of the ARP request, packet filtering,
routing error, or a silent discard. Most often, it means that a route back to the
sending host has failed. This might be because the destination host does not know
the route back to the sending host, or one of the intermediary routers does not
know the route back, or even that the destination host's default gateway does not
know the route back. Check the routing table of the destination host to see
whether it has a route to the sending host before checking tables at the routers.

Unknown host

This error message indicates that the requested host name cannot be resolved to
its IP address; check that the name is entered correctly and that the DNS servers
can resolve it.

Destination host unreachable

13 | P a g e
This message indicates one of two problems: either the local system has no route to
the desired destination, or a remote router reports that it has no route to the
destination. The two problems can be distinguished by the form of the message. If
the message is simply "Destination Host Unreachable," then there is no route from
the local system, and the packets to be sent were never put on the wire. Use the
Route utility to check the local routing table.
If the message is "Reply From < IP address >: Destination Host Unreachable," then
the routing problem occurred at a remote router, whose address is indicated by the
"< IP address >" field. Use the appropriate utility or facility to check the IP routing
table of the router assigned the IP address of < IP address >.

If you pinged using an IP address, retry it with a host name to ensure that the IP
address you tried is correct.

Configuring Network Connections for Windows 10

Windows usually detects the presence of a network adapter automatically;

typically, you don’t have to install device drivers manually for the adapter. When
Windows detects a network adapter, Windows automatically creates a network
connection and configures it to support basic networking protocols. You may need
to change the configuration of a network connection manually, however.
The following steps show you how to configure your network adapter on a
Windows 10 system:

1. Click the Start icon (or press the Start button on the keyboard), and then tap or
click Settings.

The Settings page appears.

2. Click Network & Internet.

The Network & Internet page appears.

14 | P a g e
3. Click Ethernet.
The Ethernet settings page appears.

4. Click Change Adapter Options.

The Network Connections page appears. This page lists each of your network
adapters. In this case, only a single wired Ethernet adapter is shown. If the device
has more than one adapter, additional adapters will appear on this page.

15 | P a g e
5. Right-click the connection that you want to configure and then choose
Properties from the contextual menu that appears.

This action opens the Ethernet Properties dialog box.

6. To configure the network adapter card settings, click Configure.

The Properties dialog box for your network adapter appears. This dialog box has
seven tabs that let you configure the adapter:

 General: Shows basic information about the adapter, such as the device

type and status.
 Advanced: Lets you set a variety of device-specific parameters that affect the
operation of the adapter.

 About: Displays information about the device’s patent protection.

 Driver: Displays information about the device driver that’s bound to the NIC
and lets you update the driver to a newer version, roll back the driver to a
previously working version, or uninstall the driver.

 Details: With this tab, you can inspect various properties of the adapter
such as the date and version of the device driver. To view the setting of a
particular property, select the property name from the drop-down list.

 Events: Lists recent events that have been logged for the device.

 Power Management: Lets you configure power management options for the

device.

16 | P a g e
When you click OK to dismiss the dialog box, the network connection’s Properties
dialog box closes, and you’re returned to the Network Connections page. Right-
click the network adapter and choose Properties again to continue the procedure.

7. Review the list of connection items listed in the Properties dialog box.
 Client for Microsoft Networks: This item is required if you want to access
a Microsoft Windows network. It should always be present.

 File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks: This item allows your
computer to share its files or printers with other computers on the network.
This option is usually used with peer-to-peer networks, but you can use it
even if your network has dedicated servers. If you don’t plan to share files or
printers on the client computer, however, you should disable this item.

 Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4): This item enables the client

computer to communicate by using the version 4 standard TCP/IP protocol.

 Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6): This item enables version 6 of the

standard TCP/IP protocol. Typically, both IP4 and IP6 are enabled, even
though most networks rely primarily on IP4.

8. If a protocol that you need isn’t listed, click the Install button to add the
needed protocol.
A dialog box appears, asking whether you want to add a network client, protocol,
or service. Click Protocol and then click Add. A list of available protocols appears.
Select the one you want to add; then click OK.
9. To remove a network item that you don’t need (such as File and Printer
Sharing for Microsoft Networks), select the item, and click the Uninstall
button.
For security reasons, you should make it a point to remove any clients, protocols,
or services that you don’t need.

17 | P a g e
10. To configure TCP/IP settings, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP); click
Properties to display the TCP/IP Properties dialog box; adjust the settings;
and then click OK.

The TCP/IP Properties dialog box lets you choose among these options:

 Obtain an IP Address Automatically: Choose this option if your network

has a DHCP server that assigns IP addresses automatically. Choosing this
option dramatically simplifies administering TCP/IP on your network.

 Use the Following IP Address: If your computer must have a specific IP

address, choose this option and then type the computer’s IP address, subnet
mask, and default gateway address.
 Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically: The DHCP server can also
provide the address of the Domain Name System (DNS) server that the
computer should use. Choose this option if your network has a DHCP
server.

 Use the Following DNS Server Addresses: Choose this option if a DNS

server isn’t available. Then type the IP addresses of the primary and
secondary DNS servers.
