ELDS Gas Sensors: Advanced Detection

ELDS gas detectors are open path detectors that use laser spectroscopy to detect and analyze gases over long distances up to 200 meters. They work by transmitting a laser beam and measuring changes in absorbance when a target gas passes through, allowing detection of unique harmonic fingerprints. Key advantages are highly selective detection with no false alarms from interference gases, suitability for monitoring open areas and dispersed releases, and earlier leak detection. While they cannot pinpoint leak locations, ELDS systems offer increased sensitivity over point detectors.

Enhanced Laser Diode Spectroscopy (ELDS) Industrial Gas

Sensors
INTRODUCTION
Open Path Gas Detectors (OPGD) are line-of-sight gas monitors commonly installed
to monitor for gas presence over long distances
ELDS gas detectors are open path Gas detectors that work through a sensor laser optical
technology that recognizes and analyzes a gas’s harmonic fingerprint.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
While using separate transmitter / receiver configuration, ELDS systems detect and measure gas
concentrations at specific target gas absorption wavelengths over distances of up to 200 meters. The
detector measures absorbance changes along the line-of-sight path when a combustible or toxic gas
passes through the beam. Target gas absorbs laser energey and creates unique Harmonic Finger print.
ADVANTAGES OF ELDS SYSTEMS
 These sensors have the advantage over some others since they do not
provide false alarms due to interference gases, as the highly selective
technology can detect each gas’s unique harmonic fingerprint. They are
also immune to poisoning since they are an optical device.

 Open path systems are particularly useful in those situations where a

gas release has been dispersed by wind or natural diffusion.

 Butane/Propane Storage tanks in this project are using using four

submersible pumps and a number of instruments will be insalled at tank
platforms. Using ELDS type detector on the top of tank will have the
advantage of being able to cover large open areas, a line of several
potential leak sources such as a row of valves or pumps, and also for
perimeter monitoring of leaks.

 Lower Level/ Earlier Detection allows remedial action

 Less sensors reduces CapEx cost and cost of ownership
 Gas specific.. never a false event or cross interference which avoids costly shutdowns
 Very Fast Response
 Single multigas units with gas specific differential

 ELDS-based OPGD systems offer three orders of magnitude in increased sensitivity for
hydrocarbons, greatly increasing the probability of detecting a flammable gas leak before it
reaches catastrophic proportions.

DISADAVANTGES
Unlike point gas detectors, open path IR detectors do not pinpoint the location
of a leak since the leak can occur anywhere along the optical path.

Innovative signal processing methods significantly increase sensitivity, enabling reliable detection down
to fractions of a % LEL meter of combustible gases, and low ppm meter levels of toxic gases. ELDS
addresses problems experienced by traditional laser diode systems including laser Relative Intensity
Noise (RIN), absorption by atmospheric gases, and coherence / fringe effects. ELDS uses a combination
of techniques which significantly enhance the ability of an OPGD to detect small fractional absorbances
with an extremely low false alarm rate. ELDS techniques allow our customers to finally meet stringent
regulatory and safety integrity requirements with a false-alarm free system for low level combustible
and toxic gas detection.
