Bai Giang - Ky Thuat in Kim Loai - KHAC NGUOI - A
1. The metal, which can be zinc, copper, or steel (see p. 22), is prepared,
degreased, and dried. It is placed on a hotplate where the ground ball is melted onto
the surface. If the plate is too cool the ground will not melt and therefore will not
roll out evenly.
2. The ground is rolled over the surface of the plate in an even layer. If
the ground is too thin the acid will bite through where it is not required; this is
called “foul biting”. If the ground is too thick or uneven, the drawn lines will
appear irregular when bitten. If too much ground has been used, the plate should be
moved onto a cold surface; when the roller passes over the cooling metal much of
the excess ground will return to the roller. This excess can be used on the next
plate.
Traditionally the ground was darkened simply to make it easier for the artist to see
their work. However, the procedure also evens out the wax layer and further hardens
the ground, adding increased resistance to the acid.
4. To darken the surface of the plate, the ground is smoked with tapers.
The head loosens the beeswax, which absorbs the soot from the flame. The wax
hardens again when it is cool. The plate is balanced on an improvised plate so that
the tapers can be held up to the waxed surface.
5. If the plate is handheld, the metal will require small piece of paper
wedged under the teeth of the pliers or handgrip to prevent scratching. Steel will
attach to a magnetic strip used for holding kitchen knives, which can also be
handheld. Seven or eight wax tapers, warmed and twisted to hold together, are now
needed to produce a flame.
6. The taper is held up to the wax surface, making sure that the flame
alone comes in contact with the ground, and not the taper itself. The plate is held
by once corner while the smoking is begun at the opposite corner. The ground will
first appear dull, but as it heats and the beeswax melts, the surface becomes shiny
and the soot from the flame can be absorbed. The tapers are moved slowly across
the surface as the shine appears.
7. When the plate is cold it is ready to work on. There is a vast range of
needles and roulettes in various sizes that can be purchased in specialist
printmaking and hardware stores. However, any tool sharp enough to scratch
through the surface of the ground so that the metal is visible will suffice; you could
use a dart compass point, sewing needle, or gimlet. A fine piece of sandpaper can
scuff the surface to create a soft, scratchy mark, while mineral spirit on a cotton
bud will remove the ground and leave an “open bite”. On zinc, an open bite
appears as a grazed surface with a darker edge, which can be polished in chosen
areas.
8. It is not necessary to press hard to obtain to a mark-only the ground
needs to be removed, as the acid will create the incision into the metal. The initial
mark may be just a line structure acting as a guide for further marks and tones to be
added at a later stage. A magnifying glass will help to assess whether the tool has
penetrated through to the metal.
9. It is necessary to protect the back of the plate before it is put in the
acid, of the energy from the acid will be expelled on the expanse of metal, and the
plate will become thinner. A car spray metal primer can be applied after the surface
has been decreased. This can remain on throughout the various processes that the
plate will need to go through, without being removed even at the final printing.
An alternative is parcel tape, but this much be removed each time the plate is heated
for an aquatint or put on the hotplate, as the glue forms into bumps that affect the
plate.
Stop-out, or straw-hat varnish, can be used, but again this will need to removed each
time the plate heated.
10. The sides need to be protected with stop-out varnish to prevent the
acid spoiling the smooth bevel. If this is not done the nibbled edge will hold ink,
which will appear as a distraction in the print.
11. If the plate is the bitten in a bath of nitric acid it will be possible to
see bubbles forming. These need to be removed occasionally with the feather, to
prevent the line biting in an irregular fashion.
An average line on a zinc plate in a bath of nitric made from 5 parts water to 1 part
acid will take approximately 20 minutes. The plate can be removed earlier to paint out
lines that are required to be quite fine, or left in the bath longer for lines that are to be
heavier.
12. The plate needs to be washed back and front with water before it is
removed from the acid area.
13. The depth of line bitten by the acid can be checked using a
magnifying glass, and by testing with a needle to feel the ridge that will eventually
hold the ink. If the lines have a golden look, and the needle does not catch in the
mark, this means there is a slight skim of ground preventing the acid getting
through; it may be necessary to rescratch those lines.
14. When the plate appears to be bitten, it is good practice to take only a
small area of the ground off initially to check the depth of line. If the bite is
insufficient then the area can be re-covered and the plate returned to the acid. If the
line is good then the whole plate can be cleaned with mineral spirit and a rag.
The plate is now ready for the first proof to be printed.
Etching process: Soft-ground

.
6. The scratch marks, and raised burr of metal, can be easily seen on the
surface of the plate. Also note the dotted lines created by the wheel roller.
7. The finished image to be printed is placed on the hotplate. It is then
inked and gently wiped with gauze and tissue before being put through the etching
press under a piece of dampened paper.
8. Note the rich, velvety black mark that have a soft, almost blurred
quality, with the dots of the wheel roller standing out in contrast.
Step by step: Dry-point
1. Preparation:
1. Chuẩn bị:
The plate is the prepared in the normal way: the surface cleaned and polished, and the
sides filed to a 45-degree angle and scraped.
2. Materials:
2. Vật liệu:
The minimum requirements to create the block are a surface to work on and a needle to
scratch with.
Zinc or copper are the ideal surface, as they are sufficiently soft to easily work into, but
survive to produce a reasonable number of prints. Copper plates can be steel-faced to
produce large editions. Steel is too hard, and aluminum is so soft that it will allow only
a few prints to be made. Plexiglas, or plastic, has a similarly short printing life.
3. Drawing:
3. Vẽ:
A basic sharp needle will create a mark. Traditionally, the dry-point needle had a heavy
handle to aid in creating additional pressure to form the required burr. The burr retains
the ink and produces the printed mark. Wheels and roulettes can also be used, as well
as coarse sandpaper, wire brushes, or wool, which will scuff the surface to create a
light tone.
4. Corrections:
4. Sửa chữa:
Unwanted lines can be removed with the scraper-burnisher, and additional marks
added as required. Prior to printing, loose ink can be gently rubbed into the lines to
allow the artist to see the work in progress.
5. Printing:
5. In:
The plate is printed in the normal way for an intaglio image (see.p. 133/136), but
special care is taken to wipe the surface gently to avoid destroying the burr. The ink is
oil-based, and the paper pre-dampened. This is a good medium for capturing
spontaneity as there is no need for the use of grounds or acid, and Chine collé (see.p.
214/222), is an immediate way of adding color.
