Lab Data Form Mechanics of Machines (ME-213L)

EXPERIMENT # 10
OBJECTIVE:
To plot follower displacement vs cam rotation for various cam follower systems.
Cam:
A cam is a rotating element that gives oscillating or reciprocating motion to the follower
which is another element of this machine by direct contact.
Types of Cams:
i) Disk or Plate cam
ii) Cylindrical cam
iii) Translating cam
iv) Wedge cam
v) Heart-shaped cam

Follower:
A follower is a rotating or an oscillating element of a machine that follows the motion of cam
by direct contact.
Types of Follower:
i) Knife edge follower
ii) Roller follower
iii) Flat-faced follower
iv) Spherical follower
v) Offset Follower

Cam & follower mechanism:

A cam and follower mechanism is a profiled shape mounted on a shaft that causes a lever or
follower to move. Cams are used to convert rotary to linear (reciprocating) motion.
As the cam rotates, the follower rises and falls in a process known as reciprocating motion.

Cam-Lift, fall and dwell:

Cams can provide a lift (when the follower is moving up), fall (when the follower is moving
downwards and dwell (when the follower is not moving).
Applications:
1) Internal Combustion Engine to close and open the outlet valve and intake valve.
2) Automated Types of machinery.
3) Hydraulic Systems
4) Printing Machinery
5) Textile Types of machinery
6) Gear-Cutting Machineries.
7) Automatic Lathe Machine.
