Experiment # 5

To investigate Tappet motion for Constant Acceleration Cam profile.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Cam and Tappet
Cam is a mechanical device used to transmit motion
to a follower by direct contact. The driver is called
cam and the driven member is called follower. Their
purpose is to convert rotary motion to linear or
rocking motion. Within certain limits any desired
linear or rocking motion can be obtained by a
suitable cam profile.
Constant Acceleration Cam

Constant acceleration cam gives constant acceleration throughout the first

half of motion and the same value but deceleration throughout the second
half.

The cam profile is the second integration of a constant as we require constant

acceleration.
So a curve which meets these requirements is described by the equation
Constant Acceleration Cam
The governing equation for constant acceleration cam is

Where,

By rearranging the governing equation

Constant Acceleration Cam
The theoretical value of tappet travel for constant acceleration cam is given
by:

0 to 90 degree (1st quadrant)

91 to 180 degree (2nd quadrant)

181 to 270 degree (3rd quadrant)

271 to 360 degree (4th quadrant)

Applications
The application of cam and tappet includes:

• Engines

• Machine tool

• Textile Machinery

• Packaging Machinery
