EXPERIMENT NO.1
Determine displacement, velocity and acceleration diagrams of Withworth
Quick Return Mechanism.
Objective:
To make use of model of Withworth Quick Return Mechanism to draw displacement, velocity and
acceleration graph from the readings obtained from the experiment. To discover the areas in field of
engineering where Quick return mechanism is used and to make possible conclusions about the pros and
cons of this mechanism.

Apparatus:
Following materials are required for this experiment.

 Quick return Mechanism

 Lubricating oil
 Graph papers
 Pencils

Theory:
Quick return mechanism is used to produce repetitive back and forth linear motion in which time taken to
travel distance in one direction is comparatively less as compared to other. it is driven by circular motion
which may be a motor on a large or hand operated wheel mounted with handle on it. It is used to convert
rotatory motion into reciprocating motion. Quick return mechanism found its use in shaper machine where
time required to move to original position is lesser as compared to time needed for moving forward for
shaping the specimen. It has circular crank attached with link to the linear part. Crank is of 360 degrees.
For every fixed movement of crank, there is a corresponding movement on linear part.

Following diagram shows the model of quick return mechanism. It has circular disc with link.

Demonstration of Quick Return Mechanism

Procedure:
 Take the given apparatus and lubricate the moving parts of machinery to avoid any friction.
 Rotate crank by angle of 10 ° and note the corresponding displacement of slider through given
linear scale.
 Repeat the experiment until one complete rotation of crank is completed.
 From the obtained readings, draw the graph between displacement and degree of rotation.
 Draw tangents at the above graph to draw velocity time graph.
 Similarly draw acceleration time graph from velocity time graph by drawing tangents.

Velocity Graph:
In order to draw velocity graph, draw tangents to the displacement graphs at every 30°.The values obtained
will be of velocity which is plotted against angle of rotation to obtain required graph.

Acceleration Graph:
Acceleration graph can be obtained from the velocity graph in a similar manner. Tangents are drawn to the
graph at an interval of 30 degrees. The obtained values when plotted with angle of rotation, gives the

Applications:
Following are the applications of Quick- Return Mechanism.

 Shaping machines
 Screw press
 Power driven saw
 Mechanical Actuator
 Revolver Mechanism
 Piston-Crank Mechanism

Comments:
While noting the noting the readings, the observer should be exactly above the apparatus in order to avoid
parallax error. Bring the linear scale to zero by slowly rotating the disc and start taking observations by
considering the reading on circular disc as reference.
