UNIT 3: Budding Scientist Level: 2nd Year Scientific Stream
Sequence 1: Discovering the Language
Lesson: Conditional: Types 0 and 1

Intermediate objective: By the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to use correctly if-conditional type
zero and type one.

Prerequisites of the lesson: present simple, future simple, possibility with modals “may”.

Lesson Steps
Lead-In: Look at the pictures and discuss with your teacher. (5 mns)
Objective: learners should be able to distinguish between the concepts condition / result through a real
example.

Steps:
- T shows 2 pictures to interact with the learners
- T asks, “What happens if you heat ice?”
 To elicit answers like “if we heat ice, it melts/becomes water or liquid…”.
- A learner writes the elicited sentence on the board.
- As a concept check, T asks “In this case, what is the condition (or what do we need) to get ice melt?”
heat/fire; then he asks, “and what is the result of heating ice?”  ice melts

Task1: Go back to the text pages 80-81 (paragraphs 2, 3, 4&5) and pick out sentences including “if”. (5mns)
Objective: learners should be able to recognize the if-clause sentences.

Steps:
- A learner reads the instruction then T asks “what are you going to do?”, “how?”
 skimming for “if” in paragraphs 2-5
- T interacts with the learners to get the sentences.
- T informs the learners that they are going to consider only 4 sentences for the next activities.

Task2: (Pair work) Consider sentences 1-4 and do the activities that follow. (10 mns)

Objective: the learners should be able to analyze the if-conditional sentences.


Steps:
- T provides the handout
- A learner reads the instruction then T asks “what are you going to do?”
 to perform an ICQ
- learners do the task in pairs.
- T moves around to provide help and check that all the learners are working.
- Once allotted time ends, teacher interacts with the learners to get their answers.
- Collective correction.

A- Divide the previous sentences into “condition” and “result”.

Task3: Classify the 4 sentences above under 2 columns according the result tense. (5 mns)
Objective: the learners should be able to categorize the conditional sentences.
Steps:
- T performs an ICQ to make sure the learners know what they need to do.

Task 5: (Individual Work) Use the right type of conditional by putting the verbs in brackets in the correct

Objective: learners should be able to apply correctly the rules of conditional types 0 and 1.
Steps:
- T performs an ICQ to make sure learners know what they need to do.
- T moves around to check that every learner is doing the task.
