Lesson Concept: Review of Related Literature.

Review of Related Literature (RRL) is an evaluative report of information found in the literature related to
your selected area of study. It can be an oral or written record of man’s significant experiences that are artistically
conveyed in a prosaic manner. RRL is the process of collecting, selecting, and reading books, journals, reports,
abstracts, and other reference materials. Listed below are the things that may be included in the RRL.
1. Background information about the problem and related concepts.
2. Theories that explain the existence of the problem and the possible connection
between certain factors and the problem.
3. Data that confirms the existence and seriousness of the problem.
4. General and specific findings of studies related to the problem.
5. Recommendations for further study given in related studies.
The purpose of RRL is to obtain background knowledge about your research and to relate your study to
the current condition or situation of the world. It is also to show the capacity of your research work to introduce
new knowledge. Another purpose of RRL is to highlight the significance of your study with the kind of evidence it
gathered to support the conclusion of your research and to avoid repeating previous research studies as well as
to recommend the necessity of further research on a certain topic.
In writing your RRL make sure to review the precise definition of the research problem. Take note of the
key variables specified in the study objectives and hypothesis. Formulate search terms or key words which will be
needed for easy hunting of information. Make sure to list all the reference elements like author, title of the
article, date or year of publication, publisher and location of publication as well as the page numbers.
There are three types of literature sources. The term sources refer to print, electronic or visual materials
necessary for your research. Sources are classified into primary, secondary and tertiary sources. Example of
primary sources are letters/correspondence, diaries, memoirs, autobiographies, official or research reports,
patents and designs and empirical research articles. Secondary sources examples include academic journal
articles, conference proceedings, books and documentaries. Tertiary sources include the encyclopedias
dictionaries, handbooks, and atlas.
