MODULE 6: FUNCTIONAL ARTS OF MINDANAO

Balanghay, also known as balangay or

Butuan Boat, is a large wooden boat used by the
pre-colonial Filipinos to traverse the seas for trade or
migration. It was first mentioned in the 16th Century
in the Chronicles of Pigafetta, and is known as the
oldest Pre-Hispanic watercraft found in the
Philippines. Pigafetta’s account of the balangays
during the first days of the Spaniards in the
Philippines. He was invited by Filipino royalties to a
meal. This record is where the word “balangay” was
found. Pigafetta recorded the word both as balangai
and as balanghai, which, of course, he would have
pronounced the same since Italian had no h-sound. The role of the Balangay
excavations in the 1970’s in proving that Butuan was the location of the first mass
of the Philippines: There was a confusion on where the first mass of the Philippines
was really held. It was initially thought that Limasawa was the location of the first
mass. According to Pigaffetti’s accounts, the first mass was held in an island called
“Manzaua,” and there has been debate on whether Manzaua is present day
Limasawa or Butuan. This issue was cleared with the help of the nine ancient
balangays discovered in Butuan in the late 1970’s along with Pigafetti’s journal
account about the presence of “balanghais” on Manzaua. Since Limasawa has no
significant archaeological relics or balanghai tradition, the boats were evidence that
Butuan is indeed Mazaua and is therefore the birthplace of Christianity in the
Philippines.
Archaeologists found parts of the balangay in Butuan City in 1976.These
artifacts are dated from anywhere between 320-1250 CE. They are estimated to
measure (15 m) long and (3-4 m) wide, propelled by sail of buri or nipa fiber or
padding, and holds 60 to 90 people. It was used for cargo and riding purposes,
serving as evidence that Butuan played a central role in trade. The finely built boat,
constructed without the use of blueprints was taught from one generation to
another. This technique still used by both makers of Sibutu Island.

Vinta

This boat is traditionally made by the

Badjaos who live in the Sulu archipelago.
The sail, called vinta, consists of several
colors and geometric shapes, representing the
colorful culture and history of the Muslim people.
These boats are small and not meant to be use for
long ocean travel. They are used for livelihood
activities such as fishing and diving for pearls and
transportation around the archipelago.
.

ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY NO.1- CREATE A VINTA

Directions: By using ordinary materials, create a miniature vinta using your own
color combination and pattern.
Materials:
1. 1.5L PET bottles cut in half, lengthwise
2. 2 pcs.of short bond papers
3. Popsicle sticks or broomstick
4. Art papers
5. Coloring materials
Procedures:
I. The Body
1.Fold the paper diagonally, and then cut the excess piece to make a square.
2.Fold the paper in half horizontally.
3.Fold one half of the paper outward and upward towards the centerfold. Repeat on
the other side.
4. Unfold one side (leaving the other side folded facing down) then fold all the
corners inward to the center evenly.
5.Fold back in half inward to form a trapezoid.
6. Open the longest side fully making 2 opposite tips overlapping each other.
7. Make a small create inward on both new made tips to create a flat base.
8. Finally open the overlapping flaps to form the boat.

II. The Sail

Use bond paper, art papers and coloring materials to design your own vinta
sail patterns. Use popsicle sticks or the like to act as a pole to support the sail.
III. The Outriggers (Katig)
Use popsicle sticks and form a 2-step ladder then attach it at the bottom of
the body. After assembling your vinta, you may add more detail to give character
to your creation.
ACTIVITY 2: Look at the pictures below. Observe the elements of arts like line,
shape, form, space and texture. Give interpretation/meaning based on your own
