Today we will learn a teaching strategy
SESSION called Errorless Learning commonly
OBJECTIVES have used for Special Education
students to teach ESOL students.
CSTP 1.4 Using a variety of instructional strategies,
resources, and technologies to meet students’ diverse
learning needs.

CSTP 3.6 Addressing the needs of English learners and

student with special needs to provide equitable access
to the content

Learning: a) Assists colleagues in accessing and using
research in order to select appropriate strategies to
improve student learning

NBPTS Proposition 1 : Teachers are committed to

students and their learning
HAVE YOU TRIED EVERYTHING?

Do you have ESOL students who still

don't recognize sight words of his/her
grade level even though they were
exposed for a long time?
WHAT IS ERRORLESS LEARNING?

Errorless learning is an
antecedent intervention
from Applied Behavior
Analysis (ABA).
1. ERRORLESS LEARNING?

Instructors use prompts to support the

learner in responding correctly. The
instructor then systematically fades the
prompts to promote independent
responding.
Advantages Disadvantages

•Decreases the •May become

likelihood of dependent on
errors the prompts
2. ADVANTAGES •Reduces the
learner’s
AND frustration and
DISADVANTAGES any problem
behavior
•More
opportunities
for
reinforcement

teaching strategies.

quickly and may repeatedly
respond incorrectly because
it is part of a routine.

Step 4 fade prompts
4. STEP1

Identify the skill to be taught and how you will know the
learner has mastered the skill
•Academic tasks such as letter recognition, sight words, or shapes
•Communication skills, including receptive skills such as
responding to verbal prompts and expressive skills such as asking
for something they want
•Life skills such as cooking or hand washing
Identify the level of
prompt needed to ensure
a correct response

4. STEP 2 •Physical
•Gestural
•Verbal
•Visual
•Modeling
4. STEP 3

If the learner responds

correctly, provide
immdeiate positive
Begin the teaching Provide the level of reinforcement
trial by prossessing prompt identified in
the task Step 2 If the learener reponds
incrrectly, increase the
level of prompt during
the next trial
4. STEP 4

Repeat trials, systematically fade

prompts to ensure continued correct
responses until the learner can
respond independently at the level
identified during Step 1.
DEMONSTRATION OF
ERRORLESS LEARNING
• Step1 Teach sight words
• Step 2 Modeling + Verbal + Visual prompts
Modeling: show and read the word
Verbal: first letter sound of the word
Visual: color
• Step 3 Begins the teaching trial.
• Step4 Fade out prompts
