Module 1A

Absolute Location of
the Philippines

My learning targets

 Differentiate between maps from a globe.

 Identify the different hidden lines of the map and globe.
 Describe the location of the Philippines in the world using a
map based on its absolute location.
 Analyze the location of a specific place using the zones and its
implication to climate, economy and culture of the people.
 Evaluate how man has developed technology or means of lo-
cating a specific place.
 Analyze and evaluate the extent by which man has applied his
understanding of geography in making decisions for personal
or communal pursuits.
TRY THIS!
As starting activity for this lesson, arrange the jumbled letters in each item and to
form the hidden words. Try to use all formed words in the sentence.

EARTH: THE HOME OF HUMANKIND.
The Philippines is small part of our planet Earth. Before you can fully understand the concept,
you need to know things about your planet.

Earth is the home of humankind and other living things. Ac-

cording to scientist, it is the only planet in the solar system
which can support life in all forms. As the third planet from the
Sun, Earth is neither close nor far from its source of heat. So, it
has enough water and warmth to sustain life. Once upon a time,
it was believed that when a ship Is set sail on the sea, it would
fall off from the edge of the Earth. Because of an expedition, it
was proven that indeed the Earth is round. According to sir Isaac
Newton, an English physicist and mathematician, the earth is ob- Oblate Spherical Shape
late spheroid—it is flattened at the poles and bulging in the mid-
dle.

1
Three-fourths of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. This water is comprised of five
large bodies of water called oceans, namely, the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian
Ocean, Southern Ocean and the Artic Ocean. These are connected to each other; each one is part
of a bigger ocean. Among the oceans the Pacific is the widest and the deepest. It has an area of
165.25 million square kilometers. Its deepest part, the Marianas Trench is 11,034 meters deep.

The Water and Land Parts of the World

On the other hand, land covers one-fourth of the Earth’s surface. It is divided into big masses
of land called continents, namely, Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Australia (Oceana), Europe, North Ameri-
ca and South America. Asia is the larges continent and has an area of 43,820,00 square kilometers.
It has five different regions one of which is the Southeast Asian Region where the Philippines is lo-
cated. Also, Asia is home to 60% of the world’s population

Locating the Philippines

There are two ways to determine the Philippine’s location—through absolute location and rela-
tive location. Absolute location can be determined using longitudes and latitudes. Relative loca-
tion can be identified using landforms and water forms surrounding the place.

2
THE ABSOLUTE LOCATION OF THE PHILIPPINES and THE IMAGINARY LINES OF THE
MAP AND GLOBE
One can identify the absolute or exact location of a certain country or place on earth with the
use of map or a globe. A map or a globe has imaginary horizontal and vertical lines that intersect
and form a grid. With this grid, one can easily identify the absolute location, shape and size of any
place on Earth.
Nowadays, printed maps or globes are rarely used because of the advancement of technology.
For instance, it is impractical for any person to carry a map or globe as he or she has phone
equipped with GPS (Global Positioning System). This device can received signals, information from
any of the GPS satellites that are orbiting the Earth. The signal information then allows the user to
get his or her location. Today, the GPS is widely used in travel, navigation, commerce and science.

Useful Applications/ Software that used GPS in locating Places

Activity: Aside from the applications presented, what other mobile applications do you know
that uses the GPS? List at least 5 and briefly explains how it works.

3
THE GLOBE and MAP

The globe is the closest model to the earth, while the map is the flat representation of the
world. These are very important tools in studying the earth. They are different sizes and shapes,
and even the distances and territories of places in the world are different, too.

Looking closely at the map, one would notice that there are horizontal and vertical lines.
These are imaginary lines. These lines are of big help in identifying the location of countries of the
world. Each line is measured by degree (°). The vertical lines measures 360° around the globe and
the horizontal lines measures 90° north and south from 0°, which is the equator

Lines of the Globe and Map

Parallels
Parallels are horizontal imaginary lines in the globe. It runs east to west of the
globe. This lines are equidistant from each to one another. There are five special
parallels in the globe. These are the following

EQUATOR - the equator can be

found at the center of the globe—
equidistant to the North and the South
Pole. It is an imaginary line that di-
vides the world into northern and
western hemisphere.

Please watch this video to have an idea about the dis-

cussion regarding the Lines of the Globe and Map.

4
TROPIC OF CANCER - The Tropic of
Cancer is the northernmost part of the
world that can be reached by direct sun-
light. It also serves as the boundary to the
tropics or the warm climate.

TROPIC OF CAPRICORN - The tropic of

Capricorn is the southernmost part of the
world that be reached by direct sunlight.
The Tropic of Capricorn is the southern
boundary to the tropics.

ARCTIC CIRCLE - The Arctic circle is the

northernmost part of the world that can
be reached by the oblique rays of the sun.

ANTARCTIC CIRCLE - The Antarctic Cir-

cle is the southernmost part of the world
that can be reached by the oblique rays of
the sun.

5
Meridian

A meridian is a vertical imaginary line in the globe. It runs

north to south of the globe. The opposite ends of the globe are
called North Pole and South Pole.

There are two special meridians— the Prime Meridian and the Inter-
national dateline.

PRIME MERIDIAN - The Prime Meridian divides

the earth into two parts: the eastern hemisphere and
the western hemisphere. It is also called the Green-
wich Meridians because it passes through Greenwich
England

cated opposite of the Prime Meridian on the other side https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2hPhPlik

FINDING LOCATIONS ACTIVITY 1

Finding Locations When you use a map to locate a position, you often use the degrees of latitude
and longitude. These are called coordinates. If you know the coordinates of a point, you can use a
map marked off in latitude and longitude to locate any point on the sphere. Using the Map of the
Philippines, find the coordinates of the following places.

1. Dumaguete City - ______________________________ 6. Dagupan- __________________________

2. Surigao City - ________________________________ 7. Vigan— __________________________

3. Manila— ____________________________________ 8. Legazpi—__________________________

4. Roxas City—__________________________________ 9. Samar—____________________________

5. Cagayan de Oro—_____________________________ 10. Bacolod—__________________________

Seasons and Latitude ACTIVITY 2

Using the world Map, determine the seasons of the following places. Write 4 if the place mentioned
experiences 4 seasons and 2 if it only experience wet and dry. Write your answer on the space pro-

_____ 2. Canada _____ 7. Greenland ____ 12. Russia
_____ 3. Thailand _____ 8. Kazakhstan ____ 13. Mongolia
_____ 4. Japan _____ 9. Mexico ____ 14. Hungary
_____ 5. Brazil _____ 10. Columbia ____ 15. Iceland

COME NAVIGATE WITH ME! ACTIVITY 2

This activity has something to do with manipulating the mobile application waze.

Instructions:

1. Download the application Waze in your google store or app store.

2. After downloading, make sure to turn on your mobile data and location in the settings of your phones.

3. Open the application waze .

4. Together with your parents, choose from among the places that you want to go using the application
waze.

5. Make sure to film/record the whole duration of the travel and as well make sure to be mindful or the
number of minutes you were able to arrived to that specific destination you chose.

6. Make sure to pass the video in the email/social media platform of your teacher.

Answer the following questions:
