UNIDAD TEMÁTICA
Instruction at Universidad Santo Tomás is intended to foster integral education. In general, the
pedagogical model is founded on the problematizing pedagogy. As a result, students learn to
observe and analyze real situations, and propose possible solutions. Furthermore, according to
the Institutional Educational Project, the individual’s integral education is oriented towards his
growth as person open to communication and development, constantly involved in ideas and
values, capable of creating and fulfilling himself guided by self-determination (USTA, 2004).
Concerning English teaching and learning, language functions are nurtured and strengthened.
According to Jakobson, they are categorized into referential, emotional, conative, phatic,

metalinguistic and poetic-aesthetic. Within the English lessons, they are interconnected with the
communicative approach. In this regard, Richards (2005) states that the communicative approach
seeks language is used based on different communicative functions and features provided by
context. Thus, the communicative approach favors the development of language for practical,
useful and specific purposes.

activity proposed by the teacher. For instance, an interview, an oral presentation, a collaborative
work, and so on. In this way, students will account for their knowledge and proper use of the
