Overview
In the previous lesson, we have discussed how a statement of the problem should be written.
Different kinds of questions help make the research wholesome and proper. Despite this, there are other
things that the researcher should consider in writing the first chapter.
What topics are included in the research? Who will benefit in the study? The discussions on the
research’s inclusions and benefits make up the remaining sections of the first chapter in a research. In
this lesson, we will discuss the scopes and delimitation section and significance of the study, as well as
how writing these sections should be done.

Discussion
The variables to be studied are discussed in this section. Because many variables can be identified
under a specific subject matter, it falls to the researcher to discuss which variables are to be included
and analyzed in the study.
This section in the research paper discusses what is included and not included in the research.
The scope discusses the information or subject to be analyzed in the study, while the delimitation
discusses the scope of the study in terms of the specific aspects of the subject that will be included in
the research as well as the respondents, locus, and time period. This section also justifies why certain
aspects are included or not included.
Example:
Qualitative Study on Personality-Based Reasons for Divorce among Couples
in the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite during the year 2020
This study focused on the existing reasons for divorce based on the
personality of couples. Reasons based on other factors such as family
dynamics, financial status, quality of relationship, and extra-marital affairs
are not considered as part of the study as the research only seeks to
identify the reasons for divorce based on personality. The study only
included couples married for five to eight years with only one child.
Couples who are on their second marriages were also not considered due
to having more experience in adjustments during marriage. Furthermore,
the study is limited to the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite only, thus other cities
and municipalities in Cavite are excluded in the study. The study will also
only cover the year of 2020 and data from preceding years will not be
considered in the data analysis and interpretation.
This section explains the purpose of the research. This should be written in a manner that defines
and specifies the benefit a particular person or group of people would get from the study. Each
importance must be clear enough to address the needs and wants of people to be
covered/affected/reached/benefited by the research study. The contributions of the study to the
general body of knowledge in the field should also be stated in this section.

The presentation of this section is dependent on the format followed by the institutions in which
the researcher is under as some use the term “Beneficiaries of the Study” and presents the discussion in
paragraph form, while others use the term “Significance of the Study” and presents the beneficiaries in
bulleted form. It is important that the researcher determine the format followed by the institution
he/she is in.
Written below is a sample of a Significance of the Study. Note that this uses the title presented
above in Scope and Delimitation.
Example:
Qualitative Study on Personality-Based Reasons for Divorce among Couples
in the City of Dasmariñas, Cavite during the year 2020
Engaged and Married Couples. The results of this study can provide
the couples with background on how personality differences result into
divorce which they can use for formulating specific adjustments to their
relationship dynamics, thus resulting in a decreased tendency for divorce
based on personality reasons.
