3. Construct sentences with gerunds.

EXPLAIN
Gerund
- is used to label an important use of the form of the verb ending in -ing
- is a verb form ending in –ing and used as a noun
An -ing form is termed gerund when it behaves as a verb within a clause but the resulting clause as a whole
functions as a noun within the larger sentence.
For example, consider the sentence "Eating this cake is easy." Here, the gerund is the verb eating, which takes
an object this cake. The entire clause eating this cake is then used as a noun, which in this case serves as
the subject of the larger sentence.
Examples:
1. Swimming
2. Dreaming
3. Eating
4. Dancing
5. Singing
Four functions of gerund

1. Subject- it is a word or a phrase or a clause of a sentence about which something is stated or asked in
the predicate
Examples:
1. Exercising is good for the health
- Exercising function as a subject because it is ask by our predicate “what” is good for the health?

2. Playing volleyball is my favorite

- Playing functions as a subject because it is being ask by our predicate “what” is my hobby?

As you noticed in our two examples that we have gerund functions as a subject can be found in the beginning
part of the sentence.

2. Direct Object
- it receives the direct action of the verb
- answers the question “what”

1
Examples:
1.Takihiro does exercising in the gym twice a week
- Exercising is our gerund because it answers the question “what” Lester does “what”? The answer will be
“exercising in the gym twice a week”.

2. We do praising every day in the house

- Praising is our gerund because it answers the question “what” Doing what? The answer will be “Praising
every day in the house”

3. Object of Preposition
- describes or identifies the preposition
- it is after the preposition

Examples of prepositions are:

In, on, at, by, below, behind, under and the likes
Examples:
1. Frances keeps herself in good shape by dancing

and found after the preposition “by”

2. Let us concentrate on building bridges in support of peace

- Building is our gerund and it is function as the object of the preposition and found after the preposition “on”

4. Subject Complement

Some example of linking verb are:

Is/are – present tense
Was/were- past tense

Examples:
1 Angel’s favorite exercise is biking
-Biking is our gerund. Biking functions as a subjective complement because it describes Angel’s favoite
exercise and it is after the linking verb “is” which is in a present tense
2. Her hands is shaking
- Shaking is our gerund which describes her hands and it is after the linking verb “are”

5. Appositive- the placing of one substantive beside another to add to or to explain the first.

Examples:

1. My only exercise, walking, is not taxing

- Walking is our gerund and it is function as an appositive because it gives information to “My only
