Average Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Emissions per Person

Between 1967 – 2007

The line graph shows the changes in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per person in four
different European countries (United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Portugal) for 40 years. In general,
the average carbon dioxide emission per person in the United Kingdom and Sweden showed a
decrease while Italy and Portugal had steadily increased from 1967 to 2007.
Between 1967 and 1977, carbon dioxide in Sweden, Italy, and Portugal showed some
contrasting trends with the United Kingdom. When carbon dioxide in Sweden, Italy, and
Portugal showed an increase with one or two metric tonnes, the United Kingdom had marginally
decreased. In the next 30 years, carbon dioxide in Sweden had dramatically fell from 10 to 5
metric tonnes after reach the peak in 1977. During the same period, carbon dioxide in Portugal
and Italy had a significant increased while the United Kingdom continued its decreasing trend.
However, the United Kingdom remained the biggest producer of carbon dioxide over the period.
