DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

It's hard to believe that more than months have passed since schools across the

country suddenly closed their doors as a precaution against the spread of the

coronavirus. As shelter-in-place and stay-at-home directives were issued, districts were

forced to make swift decisions that left many teachers with little to no advance notice or

instructions about how, and for how long, they would be teaching their students from

home.

In the wake of COVID-19, educators are facing unprecedented challenges,

including the disruption of established instructional programs and routines, the rapid

transition from in-person teaching to remote learning, the emotional toll of isolation due

to social distancing efforts, and uncertainty about personal safety and health. While it is

difficult to find bright spots in a pandemic, we now have an opportunity to reflect on

how to foster teacher wellbeing practices that encourage teachers to build and strengthen

caring relationships with one another and with their students and prioritize designing and

sustaining classrooms where everyone feels emotionally and physically safe and

supported.

Divine World College of Bangued, is one of the school in the province of Abra

run by the SVD Missionary that mold the spiritual aspect and teachings about the word
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

of God which every teachers and employees must recognize. But since, we are facing

the most trending issues around the globe, the outbreak of the COVID-19 that took

many lives of the people that results to anxieties and depressions. A havoc that lead the

institutional crisis of DWCB which test the faith and spirituality and spiritual well-being

of teachers and employees which seems deteriorating.

In the past few months, the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has gone global

affecting almost all countries, societies, and health systems. It is disrupting varying

spheres of our emotional, social, and economical lives. It is also intruding into our

spiritual domain. Spirituality is the foundation of human existence and getting more

attention in global health recently.

The entire Catholic community is affected in one way or another by the

coronavirus pandeic raging throughout the world. For many, this is a challenge to our

faith and our understanding. How can this be happening? Where is God in all of this?

How should we respond as people of faith?

Spirituality goes beyond religious or cultural boundaries. Spirituality is

characterized by faith, a search for meaning and purpose in life, a sense of connection

with others, and a transcendence of self, resulting in a sense of inner peace and well-

being. A strong spiritual connection may improve one’s sense of satisfaction with life or
DIVINE WORD COLLEGE OF BANGUED

enable accommodation to disability (Delgado, 2005). Thus, spirituality is a selfless

devotion and union with God.

A human person does not only need the intellectual formation, human formation,

and the pastoral formation but one also needs the spiritual formation. The four aspects of

life must always come together and needs to be balance (Go, Real, Matias 2015).

Teachers and employees of DWCB are one of the agents that serves its client to

extend their responsibility to impart the important values and principle of the catholic

doctrine that will strengthen their faith in God and their level of spirituality especially in

this time of pandemic.

Spirituality is a foundation of all population groups that plays an integral

component of quality of life, health, and well-being both in general population and those

affected by illnesses. Spiritual practices have been recognized as a powerful coping

mechanism for dealing with life-changing and traumatic events (Roman, Mthembu and

Hoosen, 2019).

Despite the lingering uncertainty, COVID-19 silently offers us an opprtunity to

reflect on the spiritual impact it has on the world and our communities. Hence, spiritual

practices can be a powerful tool to strengthen the spirituality of the teachers and

employees of DWCB as well as its stakeholders. The purpose of this study is to provide
