INTRODUCTION TO POWER WORLD SIMULATOR

Abdul Wahab Nasir (02), BSEE 16-20

Abstract

The sole objective of this lab experiment is to understand and use the modern tool for transmission lines
named as “Power World Simulator”. In the Experiment, multiple tasks were performed to meet the
objectives as per described in the lab manual provided by the instructor. Power World Simulator is a
Windows based simulation program, originally designed for teaching basics of power system operations. It
is also used in the demonstration and implementation of a power grid. The software contains a highly
effective power flow analysis package capable of efficiently solving systems of up to 250,000 buses. Power
World Simulator can be used to study systems of just about any size. It is an interactive simulation package
designed to simulate high voltage power system operation on a time frame ranging from several minutes to
several days.

I. INTRODUCTION

Power System components:

All power systems have three major components:

1. Generation: Creates electric power.

2. Load: Consumes electric power.
3. Transmission: Transmits electric power
from generation to load.

Power World Simulator is an interactive power

system simulation package designed to simulate high
voltage power system operation on a time frame
ranging from several minutes to several days. The

the simulation. We are using student version of the
software that allows up to 13 bus systems.
5. Go to draw ribbon and place the required
components on the sheet. Here we will draw
a two bus system with one load and one
generator.
6. Go to run mode to simulate your system.
7. Show the losses in transmission line and

line losses measurements are given in Figure 3.

IV. DISCUSSION

The results obtained from power world simulator

were expected. Since we have only described the line
reactance (due to inductance), there are only MVAR
losses. Moreover the loading depicted in pie graph
depended on the MVAR rating that we set for our pie
chart. In my case I set it at 2 MVAR. This will result
in 25% system loading. This is verified and observed.

V. CONCLUSION

The lab was conducted successfully. We learnt how

complex interconnected power systems can be
analyzed using power World software. Most power
systems are balanced three phase systems. A
balanced three phase system can be modeled using a
one-line diagram. One-line models show the major
power system components, such as generators, loads,
transmission lines. Components join together data
