In your own words, explain prejudice and describe its social, emotional, and
cognitive roots. Use one of the specific types of prejudice from Lesson 11 to
support your response.

Prejudice can stem from various inputs such as family, community, cultural or
even nation. These can be based on both fact and non-facts that is just passed
from generation to generation. Its cognitive roots are born out of various
injustices and inequities between various groups of people. With see prejudice
everyday between various cultures. This is primarily due to a lack of
understanding and of the other culture. Based on the circumstances and events
it could put a great deal of emotional strain on an individual up and including
them feeling inadequate in their own community especially if from an outside
culture.

2. What type of events provoke stress responses? How do humans respond and
adapt to stress?

Stress responses cerate physical changes within the person body that will help
him react to a situation or event. This generally stems from our fight or flight
behavior to dangerous situations. However, since most day to day situations are
not necessarily life or death our everyday lives and what we do can trigger thee
changes in our body to adapt to the situation at hand accordingly. Examples of
this would be cramming for an exam, an assignment that is due or even overdue.
A individual body will adapt to the situation and enable the individual to react. In
a life or death type situation, the individual may analyze the situation or act
impulse based on the dangerous situation.

3. Describe the main dissociative disorders and explain why they are controversial.

The three dissociative disorders are identity, amnesia and derealization. Identify
dissociation involves dissociation of one’s self, it was formally referred to as
multiple personality disorder. Amnesia dissociation is forgetting oneself, while
derealization is the detachment of one’s self to its surrounding. There are a
couple of controversies surrounding these disorders. One is that it is because it
is not known where or not it is due to a traumatic event or just signs of clinical
behavior. The second area of controversy is whether the dissociation as a
defense vs pathological are vastly different.

4. Explain the aims and benefits of group and family therapy.

Both family and group therapies offer various benefits to both individuals as well
as families in different settings. Within a group therapy session, the person is
able to discuss their issues in which others can relate and or draw from that
person’s experiences hence aiding in their own therapy. Usually in these types
of settings there are a group of individuals with a counselor as a moderator to
help things moving. Within a family therapy session, the therapy is more geared
to the family dynamics and sets out to either resolve or bring to light issues with
various family members. Both have its advantages and are geared for different
types of therapy. In fact, an individual can attend both a group and family
therapy session based on what the individual is currently going through and
trying to resolve.

5. Explain the goals and techniques of cognitive and cognitive-behavioral therapies

Cognitive therapies are short term therapies for a wide range of problems. They
help and shape the way we think and behave. It is primarily a learning or
relearning process. It can also allow an individual to not focus on what has
necessarily happened in the past but rather prepare for the future. These rely on
various methods such as planning, communication, and even thinking for future
events. They can be one on one session or group session based on the situation
and circumstance of the individual. Studies have shown that cognitive therapies
are better for certain types of conditions, such as depression, anxiety, fears and
obsessions as well as other types of disorders.
